$2-3M would be substantial to me even if spread over 8 years even when I’m making $50M in those 8 years. Plus, does that take into account if I sign somewhere with a state tax I’m losing $XM over those 8 years to state taxes?

It’s kind of weird, but I still follow Wild prospects/draft more than Tampa. I found this little nugget from ESPN.
Having a coherent plan and then sticking to it is arguably the most important skill you can have as a GM, and the biggest failing of Minnesota’s latest moves is that they don’t appear to have one. When they traded Charlie Coyle for Ryan Donato and Mikael Granlund for Kevin Fiala, the explanation was that they were looking to get younger and faster as a team. Now they’re reportedly looking to trade one of their best skaters in Zucker for 31-year-old Michael Frolik or 32-year-old Phil Kessel, while also reportedly preparing to make a big offer in free agency to 31-year-old Wayne Simmonds, whose skating is certainly on the decline at this point of his career.
Holy crap, that is misguided. I hadn’t heard of the Frolik and Simmons interests.
I thought when I saw Frolik his rookie season that he was going to be a stud. FROLIK ATE THE CURSE! I have no idea why anyone but a contender looking for depth and a 3rd liner would be interested in him. He’s hardly a player to be pursued aggressively by any team.
Simmons, he was OK (Being generous)) in his prime, but….he is no longer in his prime.
Kessel* SEE ALSO Vanek
On another note, Lou retired. Luongo seems like a pretty cool dude by all accounts.
basseyesPosts: 2502June 27, 2019 at 1:01 pm #1864604Don’t have any confidence in Fenton currently. A couple good moves could change that, but things seem rudderless.
June 27, 2019 at 1:16 pm #1864607There’s no worthwhile young FA (Panarin/Duchesne) that would want to come here starting next season, so don’t overpay for an older average player (Simmons) just to say you did something. I would rather Fenton throw his cards down and go all in and try to sign one of the young studs (Liane/Marner) to an offer sheet…yes you would lose good draft picks, but it’s a crapshoot if they turn into anything (our previous 1st round draft pick success is bad, for every Gaborik/Koivu/Granlund/Dumba success story, there are many more absolute failures Sheppard/Cuma/Phillips/Gillies/Theilen/Pouliot)
Get a proven superstar for the next 6-8 years you could build the franchise around…
June 27, 2019 at 1:39 pm #1864610Whoops< sorry I didn’t see this part.
like I said, they figured this savings out over the 8 year contract Karlsson signed and it was something like an extra $2-$3 million he keeps in his pocket vs another player signing the exact same contract in a state with an average sales tax…
June 27, 2019 at 1:54 pm #1864614If I were Fenton I wold go hard after Dzingel
The other 2 I would look at are Nyquist and Anders Lee. I wouldn’t bother looking at any others.
I suppose picking up Markus Granlund might be a nice gesture for all those fans stuck with Wild Granlund jerseys.

This team needs a major move to re-energize the fanbase, while he’s a good player, I don’t see Nyquist selling any tickets.. I’m not sold on Lee maintaining his production in the future…Sign Laine to a $9 million offer sheet or roll the dice and try and get Nylander from the Leafs, Right-shot problem solved for the forseable future…
CaptainMuskyPosts: 22316June 27, 2019 at 3:13 pm #1864637roll the dice and try and get Nylander from the Leafs, Right-shot problem solved for the forseable future…
I am still in support of doing something for Nylander or Kapanen, but there will likely not be any significant salary going the other way since the Leafs are so strapped.
Haula gets traded to Carolina? Well, two members of the “band” are back together. I would have liked to see him come back here.
At this point I am really not liking how this team is stacking up against the division next year. Something dramatic is going to have to happen in our forward lineup to really change that. We have some young guys looking to prove something, but no guys you can really count on that will have a great year.
I actually hope Koivu has a slow recovery so it gives the younger guys a shot and forces Fenton to think ahead and do something now.
June 27, 2019 at 3:47 pm #1864644I just re-looked at the compensation for an offer sheet, if you could get Laine signed at under $8.4 per season, the comp going back to the Jets would be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pick… I’d do that deal in a second if I were the Wild, but I think the Jets cold afford to match that…once the $ gets higher, I think they are screwed though…
A contract offer of $8.4-$10.6 would require 2 x 1st rounders a 2nd and a 3rd round pick…I’d do that as well for one of the best pure goal scorers in the league not even close to hitting his prime yet….
Somebody will do an offer sheet this year…why not the Wild?
June 27, 2019 at 5:10 pm #1864658I think you guys are crazy. You need to be in rebuild mode so the team is strong in 2-3 seasons.

We need a damn GM that isn’t an on-the-job trainee and that knows how to draft. Last year’s R1 draft pick, a d-man that we didn’t need even then, is looking more and more like he may NEVER make the team. Who does Fenton think he is, Riseboro or something?
We should have had a second R2 pick this year if Feckless Fenton would have played the Nino deal right.
We have too many other needs to try to hit it out of the park with an offer sheet lottery win. One player doesn’t make a team. You’d be as likely to become the next Edmonton as you would to turn that kind of a gamble into significant playoff runs.

The offer sheet scenario isn’t as bad as most make it seem, especially when the young player is as good as a Laine/Marner/Point.
What if before the draft started you could trade in your 1st, 2nd, 3rd round draft picks and then be handed 1 guaranteed young superstar, wouldn’t you do that trade in a heartbeat? The salary situation is what it is, you either pay them now or the price just keeps increasing each year, but the superstars will always get paid…
This is all just a pipedream because the teams that own these players know how valuable they are and will likely match any offer sheet anyways…but you can keep them in cap hell by doing so…
July 1, 2019 at 9:49 am #18652585 year deal at $6 per for Mats Zuccerello? So much for Fenton’s plan of getting younger, faster and bigger…I can’t believe the rumors that Parnarin is being offer $12+ per season!!
It’s getting out of control again…
CaptainMuskyPosts: 22316July 1, 2019 at 10:25 am #1865266That and Anders Lee over $9MM that is ridiculous!
Yeah, while I think signing Zuccerello is good for the team, its a bit perplexing that they traded away a very similar player in Granlund. Zuccerrello is certainly grittier, but they are getting an older guy on a longer term deal. Would have had to sign Granlund after this upcoming season and he likely could have gotten a lot of money, but this is a bit of a head scratcher to me.
I like the Ryan Hartmann depth lower 6 signing. I just have to wonder if there isnt something bigger looming.
I cannot believe Kessel. He didnt want to play here because he wanted to win, but goes to AZ? Good luck with that!July 1, 2019 at 10:34 am #1865269I’m letting this fully play out, but I have no idea what Fenton’s plan appears to be anymore…What’s scarier is that i’m not sure he does either…Lots of rumors that Aho will get an offer sheet…I find it sad that Owners and GM’s complain that salaries are out of control, and then you see them offer these dumb contracts…

I found a Dallas Stars article recently discussing the no tax sates contract advantage and the moral of the story is the advantage comes fully into play with the large signing bonus, otherwise they are taxed on road games like everyone else.
“While no state taxes in Texas assuredly helps the Stars, it’s not as big an advantage as often thought. Players are taxed on their salaries based on where they earn the money, so for road games, players are taxed by the city and state they play in. For example, if the Stars had a week-long road trip through California, they would get taxed that week by California.
But if the contract is structured with heavy signing bonuses paid in July (like Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn’s are), the no-tax effect is amplified.”

yuck
Brady ValbergPosts: 326July 1, 2019 at 12:22 pm #1865290Yea the zucarell signing is questionable but in reference to granlund all’s we can hope for is zuc don’t disappear in the playoff like granny did…if we make it there in the next 5 years
jeff_hubertyInactivePosts: 4941July 1, 2019 at 1:05 pm #1865298It’s looking more like a teardown the way it’s going.
The question is; is this the bottom? or do the Wild Rattle around the bottom ten teams again for the next several years to come.If your a player and you look at a Fenton led team that seems to be in a death spiral why would you commit to this team? Zuccerello have no where else to go?
I have a vision of Modano and Boudreau sitting in a back corner booth over at Mancinis and scratching there heads about what is going on?Derek Falvey and Thad Levine have any spare winter time?
July 1, 2019 at 1:08 pm #1865299I just don’t get it, for a team that struggles mightily to score goals, we pass on the best pure goal scorer in years in the draft (likely scared off by his size) but then give a 5 year/$30 million dollar FA contract with no movement clause (means we’ll have to protect him for the Seattle xpansion draft) to another 5’7″ player who’s never scored more than 26 goals in a season and will be trending downward in his career…
We have a much younger player (Zucker) who just scored 21 goals in what many consider a very disappointing year and locked in at a good contract that we’ve been trying to deal to anybody the last 6 months…
wtf is Fenton doing?
CaptainMuskyPosts: 22316July 1, 2019 at 1:39 pm #1865304Yea the zucarell signing is questionable but in reference to granlund all’s we can hope for is zuc don’t disappear in the playoff like granny did…if we make it there in the next 5 years
Thats a great pt. Zuccerello was great in the playoffs this year for the Stars. Cannot say that for Granlund. He also gets the majority of his goals/pts on the PP. There are things about his game I like, but its just an odd thing.
I think Fenton is panicking because many of these top tier guys dont want to come here. I mean, he was interested in Pavelski, Lee, etc and even the home town kid wouldnt come here. Pavelski is from Wisconsin for crying out loud and he wouldnt come here either.
I get it, they want to win, but you put a guy like Pavelski on this team even at his age, that changes things immensely. I am glad they didnt go after Simmonds or he turned them down too LOL.July 1, 2019 at 1:51 pm #1865307Montreal just put an offersheet on Aho…will it be the last? What about Mariner and Point?
CaptainMuskyPosts: 22316July 1, 2019 at 2:00 pm #1865311Montreal just put an offersheet on Aho…will it be the last? What about Mariner and Point?
You dont hear about Offer Sheets often. The Canes GM has said that he would match any offersheet out there, but we will see.
Giving up 4 1st round picks for an elite player like Marner or Aho would not be something I would consider, but hey, its not my job to get this team better. Here is how it breaks down, 4 firsts for a guy like Marner (if he gets what he is expecting). Far too steep IMO.
$1,395,053 or below: None
$1,395,054-$2,113,716: 3rd
$2,113,717-$4,227,437: 2nd
$4,227,438-$6,341,152: 1st, 3rd
$6,341,153-$8,454,871: 1st, 2nd, 3rd
$8,454,872-$10,568,589:
2 1sts , 2nd, 3rdOver
$10,568,590+: 4 1stsJuly 1, 2019 at 2:09 pm #1865314i’d give up a 1st, 2nd and 3rd for a player like Aho though…who’s to say a single one of those picks turns into anything 3-4 years down the road vs getting a talent like Aho right now….
If I were the Wild, I’d put a similar offer on Laine, the worst that can happen is you make a division rival pay more then they wanted for him and screw themselves capwise even more than they are now…
I agree 4 x 1sts for Marner is too much…
jeff_hubertyInactivePosts: 4941July 1, 2019 at 2:22 pm #1865323Wild just announced signing
Matt Zuccarello
Ryan Hartman
Luke Johnson
Gabriel DumontJuly 1, 2019 at 2:28 pm #1865325who knows, maybe they have a tank strategy to get a top pick next year? Projected #1 Alixis Lafreniere is a supposed generational talent…
July 1, 2019 at 2:39 pm #1865327With the cap room you have I don’t understand why you sign zuccerello to 5 years when you should be targeting Dzingle…unless he wasn’t interested.
July 1, 2019 at 2:42 pm #1865330Fenton seems stuck in a rut with chasing players he had dealings with back in his underling days at Nashville.
Zuccarello and Hartman both could have upside, but both these players are not clear cut wins for us.
Fenton needs to put on the big boy pants and prove he can architect a big league FA deal. No news on Anders Lee, but I think Fenton, as usual, is on the sidelines adjusting his training wheels while the real GMs are making deals.
And Kessel finally gets a trade he approves of–to the Coyotes! Dissing the Wild in favor of AZ. Although how much longer they will be in AZ has to be a question. He may finish his career as a Nordique…
