Well it finally opened this weekend. Got out Saturday and was greeted by the most people I have ever seen trout fishing. Every spot we went we saw people, which is weird to see anyone in the spots I go, but we ended up with fish. We caught a nice 15inch Brookie along with two smaller ones. We caught the bigger one on a Kastmaster and the others on a white Twistertail. The rivers were down from normal and the fish were holding in deep pockets with riffles near by. I bet this bite will last a while because it seems like the brookies run before the rainbows do. If you go out look for small deep pockets and use small Kastasters, Twistertails, Rapalas in the original floating rap or countdowns are my favorite. Also little kleos in the smallest size in silver orange or all gold work well. Got to love Carlton county trout. Good luck and keep those lines tight.

Nice trout report…It’s been a while since I have fished in Carlton county – I am surprised you saw anybody up there on opener. I do have a 21″ brown mounted above my fireplace I caught in a Carlton county stream when I was 14 years old and I haven’t even been back since.

It is a very under rated trout fishing area. I have been fishing there since I was about 8 and have caught many many brookies over 16 inches with the biggest just shy of 19inches and big rainbows in that class as well and there are a lot of nice browns in that also. It was better before the massive flood that we had so it was good to see a big brookie in there yet. As for the people I think it was just the nicest opener we had in years so people thought that they should enjoy it but I still know spots that no one else does. so it was okay.

Another good weekend in Carlton County. Ran around for two days and explored some new spots. I caught 18 9 Brookies, 4 browns and 5 Rainbows. The first day then on Saturday another 22. 11 Brookies 6 Bows and another 5 browns. All nice size no monster, but a lot of fun. The hot bite of the weekend was a twistertail, but caught a nice 18 inch rainbow on a hand tied over easy egg. I also caught a sucker on a twistertail. (what the suck)

This week was a bit different as far as last week. There was more of a mix bag of fish and we saw more fish on the upstream side of deep pools. Find the Foam line leading in the pool and hit it with slow moving baits twistertails, lil kleos, or even drift a worm threw it. When the sun is out look for the fish to slide down into the pools but still on the front edge of the pools. Good luck and go get em boys and girls.
