The ice came off Minnewaska in Glenwood yesterday.

Out here in the NW Metro, Beebe still had ice yesterday evening. Getting close, but the south wind hasn’t been able to grab the ice and start finishing it off yet. Smaller shallow lakes are open.
Does anyone have a report on Tonka? Are there areas of the lake that are open yet?
The Alexandria area got another nice thunderstorm tonight.

Yeah, I saw anywhere from Alexandria, to Brainerd (including Mille Lacs), and up to Walker got some good rain last night.
Most ice is trash now lol after the rain last night. Good chunk of lakes should be almost open now.

not quite open yet. Black lake has a good 75 ft of open water from shore with ice left in the middle. Most bays the ice has pulled away from shore and is working its way toward the middle but its not open yet. Im guessing that after this week of projected highs in the 70’s it will be mostly clear by this weekend. Could use a stiff wind

Thanks for the report! I’m getting super anxious. I want to chase the crappies, but by opener I’m all about the bass. Looks like I might get a day or two.
Not sure why this thread had to be moved. It has much more to do with open water than ice fishing
Sallie and Melissa are open.. Big Detroit should follow-suit by tomorrow
Mary Lake in Alexandria had wheelers on it last week (over 24″ of ice) and now it’s nearly ice free! We are almost there!

Both are pretty cool.

DL’s official ice out date was yesterday 5/1/18
The official ice out is described as 90%+ ice free. The majority of the lake opened up on Monday and I heard there was a boat out there yesterday already.
Mary is now ice free in Alexandria!
A bunch of lakes around the area went out today, from trucks and Ice Castles to boats in 14 days! That has to be some kind of record!
I have seen Maxwell bay and the North Arm and they both look wide open as far as the eye can see from the landings…
Beebe opened up Yesterday. Most things around here should be open now. Heard Buffalo was open too.
I’m still thinking the pond will be a long shot for opener.
Bay lake was open and had a pontoon cruising it.
Serpent was close, probably this weekend.
Roosevelt ice free on the north end a day or two for the South end.
Snows all gone except for a few small plow piles.
Sorry, that was the pond a little north of Terry’s. Garrison had open water for about a hundred feet
Forecast for (Brainerd area) tomorrow is 70, sunny, and windy. I think if we could get some wind next week we’d be in good shape.
How’s gull looking Lindy? I know boats were in channel by zorbaz last weekend but curious about main lake
This morning Leech Lake city park, Kabekona bay going out as I post

Another thing to consider is akin to the “watched pot never boils”. Whether solid to liquid or liquid to vapor a certain amount of heat needs to be added before a phase change will occur. Even though an ice sheet looks like it’s just sitting there not doing anything it’s absorbing heat, especially with May sun angles and temps in the 70s. Once the ice sheet absorbs enough heat it will melt.
In Towne Marina said that Waconia is now clear. I drove by the Gray’s Bay launch on Tonka last night and there were about 4-5 trailers in the lot, most of the bay was open as well as a bit of Wayzata Bay.
Ottertail is 78% open according to the Outdoor Report. Fisher’s Resort on Mille Lacs posted a pic of some open water from the wind making a big push. I’m guessing with the wind added into the nice weather, we will only be monitoring the big lakes by Monday, and even they will have a lot of open water.

Just checked Modis and looks like we are ice free, except for some of the bigger lakes. Mille Lacs, Cass, Leech, LOW, and Red all showed some ice on Modis today, but Red looked like it was almost done and with 84 degrees today and rain later this week I think we will have most of them off by the weekend.
As a reminder, if you go to any of the big lakes this weekend, there very well could be some ice flows out there still. Something to be careful for if you are doing some night trolling, I heard hitting one at 2 am on the way to a new spot may require a change of underwear…I heard…
I drove through Walker yesterday and Kabekona Bay, Steamboat Bay, and out from Erickson’s Landing all were open. There was some open water in Walker Bay and looks like it should be mostly, if not completely ice free by the weekend.
The satellite view from yesterday, 5/6/18, shows a lot of cracks and broken ice on LOTW, and open water up at the NW Angle and in the Ontario side.
