I have a good friend who last night, at his fathers visitation service, pulled me aside and told me to get trip booked for this winter. We have talked the last couple years about taking our sons on an ice fishing trip renting a large shack. Any suggestions for the Alexandria area or anyplace further south. We are from Iowa and would like to keep the drive time down. Thanks

What are you looking to target and what time of year?

The big 3 lakes for sleeper rentals chasing walleyes would be Mille Lacs, Upper Red, and Lake of the Woods, although the last 2 are likely further than you guys are willing to drive.

Well we are looking for a shack and good numbers of any fish, perch or panfish, most likely just because they seem to provide the most action. Does not need to be a sleeper shack, a day house will be fine. Just something comfortable for 2 dads and 4 kids to fish from.

If keeping fish is not a big deal I’d go to Mille lacs. There may be some rentals in the Alex. area but I’m not aware of any. Big stone lake may be another option for you.

Joe Scegura guides in the Alex area and is active on the site, so he may be able to offer recommendations as well. I don’t know of any rentals in the area, but there are plenty of solid lakes to fish up there.

Like Iceman said I would talk to Joe he if he was available to hire the weekend I would suggest you book it now, as we know he is busy. Maybe he could include a shack to rent.

Mille Lacs. Just do it. You wont regret it unless you’re craving a fish fry! Some of the rentals up there have TVs in them with the full cable set up. Highly recommend in case the unusual slow bite occurs. Book in early January and you should be safe

That said, have they announced the ice fishing regs yet?

Not yet. Usually right around December 1st.
