I played for Highland Park in 75-76.
As far as I’m concerned, the 1970s was the best decade of the tournament. The north powerhouse programs were still there, like the Rapids, and the south was of course on the rise.
I first attended the Tournament in 1978. Even as a kid, it was like visiting a frozen version of Hollywood. It was a who’s who of the hockey universe combined with everybody who was anybody from Minnesota. I remember once the seats behind us were vacant at the start of the game, but then I turned around and Governor Al Quie and his group had moved in and the Governor was sitting directly behind me. At period break I asked him to sign my program, which seemed to surprise him and he said he’d never been asked to give an autograph at the tournament before because he was the least famous person there.
In the 1980s, we had access to the hospitality areas and of course, Brooks was there sometimes. I asked a man who turned out to be a scout if he thought Brooks would give me an autograph and he said Herb Brooks “was best met at a great distance.” I took that as a “no”.
The worst part of the tournament in the 1970s and 80s was that gawdawful Civic Center and those clear plastic boards. Anyone else remember that setup?
If there was a hockey setup in Minnesota of that size that was a worse place to play or watch hockey, I’d like to know what it was. I have never wanted to be there to watch the demolition of a building before or since, but I’d have loved to see that crappy arena hit the dirt.
