I plan to leave tonight and head to Rainy lake. Just me and the dog. Sun, good temps and low winds should make for a great couple of days hunting trophy nortons. Then I will open walleye, Sat morn, on LOTW. I’m guessing outside the gap and along pine island. After getting a fishing report from my buddy odds are I will head to Red midday Sunday as everyone else is packing up to leave. Maybe hit Mille Lacs on the way home Monday.

I think you win for best opener weekend plans! 4 of the greatest lakes in the state in one long weekend.

    Just me and the dog.

This is the part that appeals to me the most. Nice setup BTW

I’ll be in St. Lucia. It’ll likely be the best opener I’v ever had.

    LOTW the following weekend.

Matt – Post a update after your St. Lucia trip. We are looking for a place to take our daughter for a graduation gift. May have to put St. Lucia into the list

Prior Lake for bass and maybe steal some of Frydog’s white <strong class=”ido-tag-strong”>bass thunder….

Matt I spent my honeymoon on St Lucia. Amazing place.

Fishing Bass on Prior – That brings back lots of memories. I lived in Savage for 10+ years and fished Prior a lot. I’ve fished the lake since the mid 80’s. At one time most bass fishermen would have rated it as one if not the best Bass lake in Minnesota. Something happened in the late 90’s and early 2000’s and it has never been the same. It seemed to be coming back a few different times but then would fall off again. I fished a ton of tourneys on Prior. There were times that it would take close to a 4lb. average to get into the money and other when a 2.5 average would get you the win.
That landing can be a mess on opening weekend ( any weekend for that matter ) There were years where I thought it would be fun to skip fishing and just video tape people landing. Good luck and hope the fishing is good for you.

Will be on vermilion this year and years going forward. We just moved into our new place. Been coming up here for 14 years, never for opener. Should be fun.

I’ll be on the West end of Vermilion as well. First opener up there. Hoping to buy a cabin in that area next year, so hopefully the first of many.

It’s a blast. I’ve missed one opener there since I could hold a fishing pole, thanks to college finals that year in particular. Be mindful of submerged boulders when running boat through shallow bays. Be ready for the wind and extreme temp changes after sunset. Water is stained red if that influences your jig decisions at all.

Opener is a hit and miss thing for me. I hate rookie day. Mostly I watch the weather in deciding if I will partake in the annual event. With the current weather/wind forecast I plan to leave tonight and head to Rainy lake. Depends on the winds. The weather/winds start to change up Sunday night. My current setup allows for this kind of mobility.

Nice rig! This brings me back to the days of openers on Mille Lacs with the long lines. RVs in the parking lot. Do they let you overnight at the ramps anymore? Seems like something they would’ve disallowed a while ago.

I would have to agree with that! Someday maybe we can do the BW.

Heading to Nevis, and depending on the weather heading to Leech or one of the smaller area lakes. Might give Belle Taine a run at midnight too, if I can stay awake!

I was out last night with the spotlight and saw quite a few.
