MN DNR sux at technology

So got an email that says the new rollout for electronic licenses will not be complete by the March 1st deadline. This is an existing system in multiple states. The only thing I can figure is that the DNR has been so bad about electronic database housekeeping that they would not be prepared for the rollout. No date was given for the new rollout date. I try hard to support the DNR but dang they make it tough.

So does that mean I’ll need to go buy a fishing license in person?

Yup they wont be online until sometime later. Initially they said if they weren’t up on time they would waive the license until it was but now they are sticking with the old system until the other one is done.

Not just the DNR, the state government as a whole sucks at technology – remember a couple years ago they screwed up the DMV systems so bad they had to spend another 100 million on starting over and many people were stuck without licenses, tabs, etc. Not sure what the problem is (DEI? lol!) but its embarrasing. My son got stopped in ND as the state couldn’t get him plates for his vehicle, and my BIL actually had to get a state trooper help him get his plates straightened out as the DMV gave him plates for someone elses vehicle.

But…in the old system I bought my license online. I haven’t purchased one in person in years.

Because the workers still work remotely.
They were terribly inefficient working in the office with supervision, 10X worse now.

My guess would be that they are using a third party contractor to implement this and they’ve already encountered issues before the rollout.

I’ve bought them online and showed a screenshot of it. Just have it handy. The CO said they don’t want to wait for someone to go through a gallery searching for it.

This, and they had to take the lowest bidder as required by state law.

If you were a computer wiz kid would you want to work for the State of Minnesota?
One thing that would be nice is if the Lakefinder app was an up to date site for lake info, so if a launch is under construction instead of you driving 50 miles to then find its closed you could see it on the app. I get that counties usually own these sites but I wonder if they don’t buy permits. Also if a lake has had a recent kill this could be on the app, it could be more like a bulletin board instead of waiting for a full on lake report on the lake.
    Just some ideas.

The current online license license system still works just fine like it always has. No reason to fret.

Post a screenshot. I just tried to buy my 2025 Sportsmen license and there were no fishing or small games licenses available. And after a call to the DNR, they are saying they won’t be available until Feb 18th.

Its not any different than someone digging in their wallet, tacklebox or backpack for their physical license.

Sounds similar to the unfinished health care site the state tried to roll out a few years back.

Here’s my strategy that appears to be working: Get your lifetime license, go to Holiday and ask for your re-print every year. The staff won’t be able to get the system to pull it up, or the system will be down mysteriously. Then go to the next Holiday and get the re-print there. The 2nd store always figures it out after about 30 minutes LOL

I’ve had a similar experience. The Holiday in Deerwood has had their system “down” for two years in a row when I’ve gone through town. The next Holiday in Crosby has helped me in minutes…

Do we blame the DNR or the contractor hired to create the app, Payit Outdoors? Unless you have behind the scene access we won’t know. Looks like a number of other states have used payit so hopefully their products turns out well.

Bummed about the app not ready, but I’ve purchased my license online the past 4-5 years so no big deal. Buy on phone or computer. Save/transfer to phone’s documents as a pdf and sign using the pen tool. Screenshot takes way to long to find and can get lost.

*edit- I tried linking the dnr update and payit’s website but my post disappears when I do that.
