The last time Warroad won the State A championship was way back in 2005. Didn’t realize it had been that long of a drought.

The last time a non-metro based team won in class AA was in 2017, which was Grand Rapids. Been a good run for the metro teams, and I don’t see that changing this time around either.

I’d like to think that Andover is an up north team. At least we’re section 7.

About as up north as Blaine. So yeah not really.

I always thought it was a sham when Blaine, Andover, and Coon Rapids were included into section 7. As far as I’m concerned, teams from “up north” start at about Hinckley.

They’d have to combine sections 7 and 8 to have an exclusive northern section. Section 7 is slowly transitioning more and more suburban. Cloquet is moving to A next year, right?

Yep and I believe Duluth Marshall or Denfeld is going to AA.

Denfeld and Rock Ridge (formerly known separately as Virginia and Eveleth) are opting to AA while Cloquet moved down.

Since teams have the option to opt up or down every 2 years, they frequently shuffle teams around between sections to balance things out (a good example would be what they’d done with the northern teams and sections 2A/5A/7A over the years).

Just got done watching warroad again. They are good. Like really good. So deep, especially for a single A school. Physical.

I also don’t care about the negativity around them and hermantown, maht, cathedral, etc for staying A. It’s high school hockey, upsets happen all the time.

Schools can opt up a level, but can only opt down if that is the level the school should actually be designated to play at … based on enrollment (and a free/reduced lunch adjustment factor which can drop a school down a level or two).

Yes – if you opt up and it does not work out too well, you can (after a couple years) opt back down to where you are designated to play.

Co-ops are probably a little trickier to calculate.

Some HS sports – they added new classes to spread-out teams and create more “state tournament” opportunities … football and baseball are two examples over the past decade or so.

In class AA, some of these section finals are already set.

Section 1AA – Lakeville showdown, north vs south
Section 2AA – Minnetonka vs Chanhassen. Minnetonka only has 2 losses all season and one of them was against Chan.
Section 3AA – St Thomas vs Cretin DH. Battle of private schools.
Section 6AA – Wayzata vs Edina. Third time this season.
Section 7Aa – Duluth East vs Andover
Section 8AA – Moorhead vs Roseau. At least one “non metro” team will qualify.

Sure – more trophies. Also … more teams in state tournaments generating revenue. Would assume $$ is the driver here.

That’s like a who’s who of wealthy cities schools. Makes sense why they are upset at Gentry, as they have the one thing money can’t buy, daytime ice time! rotflol

So am I the only one that has a problem with how hockey tickets are made available for the state high school tournament? I have posted on this a couple of times over the years and no one but myself has commented as there being a problem. Don’t any of you folks care to go the the AA boys championship game or a bunch of you lucky enough to get grandfathered in year after year?

Just a little background. My son played high school hockey back in early 90s and while his team never reached state, each year he was on the team, tickets were made available through the school and we went to the games.

He went off to college and after he graduated we wanted to make it a tradition to go to the games again but could not get tickets.

Then in 2018 I found out that tickets were available to a select group of folks and each year they had the opportunity to get the tickets and give out, sell, etc. as they chose.

Also that year I applied to be on the list and became requestor in waiting at 2174 and 2175. Checked back in 2019 and was still at 2174 and 2175. So that year not a single new ticket owner was awarded.

In 2020, 100 new tickets were added so moved to 2074 and 2075. Checked in the other day and now after six years at 2030 and 2031. So in six years have moved up about 100 places on the list. At his rate I’ll be in my 80’s before I have the opportunity to go to boys AA championship game.

I have tried to get the local news stations to cover this and none of them are willing to check into it.

I knew how difficult it was to get those class AA tickets. I don’t go every year, but I’ve been to about 4 or 5 games over the past decade. We usually went on Thursday to the afternoon or evening session which got us 2 games per ticket. I always noticed how dirt cheap the actual face value was too – like 16 bucks per ticket, which is 8 bucks per game. Ridiculous value compared to a NHL game in terms of cost.

We usually just bought some outside from a street seller before the games. I can recall paying 30-40 bucks per session on the first day of class AA Thursday games.

If I had season tickets, I’d keep them too. It seems like a bit of a sketchy system to get them, but I don’t blame people for keeping them every year. It’s the marquee HS sporting event in this state.

That’s lame if that’s how they distribute tickets like that but I guess it’s the hottest ticket in town. I haven’t been since HS or when my brother played in it so I had no idea they changed the process.

I have friends who put their name on the list 10 years ago and finally received season tickets this year. It used to be longer waiting period (20-25)to get season ticket before they made two classes you would never really have a chance back then. I have season tickets and every couple years they ask if you want to move or stay put. The tickets have always been a waiting list. Had my tickets since 1968.

It’s might have a little less turn over now because you can now gift them to family. You could never do that back in the day we tried that and denied a few times till it changed maybe late 90’s or 2000 sometime in there.

Now you know how Packer fans feel about being on the season ticket list.

There a big difference between a high school sporting event and a professional team.

So just think, if you were not on the original list of those that were given the opportunity to buy the tickets dirt cheap, you basically have no chance to go. So those who were somehow lucky enough to get the original season tickets, like 30 years ago, have had a monopoly ever since and into the future.

This is a high school event. My taxes and everyone’s else go to support the MNSHSL, but yet don’t have a chance to go to the games.

So back in 2018 when I petitioned the MNSHSL to allow 250 or 500 new tickets a year, I was basically told that the folks from Norther Mn make this a yearly family event and they have no interest in changing this. I was also told that there are a few tickets each year that get returned by the high schools and these go on sale the night of the games at the box office. So I replied, so I live in Rochester and I should make hotel reservations and then go stand outside in the cold and hope I am lucky enough to get one of the few tickets available!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve waited in line for those before too. We eventually got some, but the seats ended up in the student section and they stand the whole time. Never again lol

Personally I dont think they should allow season tickets to a state tournament or any HS sporting event. It doesnt seem fair at all, but they know a good thing when they see it so they will definitely screw with the general public.

It is a crappy situation, but it all but guarantees the MSHSL has a sellout with little to no effort, and the ticket holders probably make some money when they can’t go on the secondary market, so I doubt it changes anytime soon. I think scalping tickets would be the only option unless you have a connection to the schools playing, unfortunately.

There are so many people selling their tickets outside. I know this is crappy way but I have so many friends get them from others selling outside and go every year and get tickets every year that way. They get hotels starting Thursday night and is a family vacation or spring break for them.
I would not stand in the line from Xcel always student section tickets. Hopefully there will be some more available with people aging out and no one wanted them any longer.

    Incorrect.

The MSHSL does not receive state funding directly (aka our tax dollars). It’s primary revenue streams are state ticket sales, broadcast rights, and sponsorships.

The MSHSL is also dead broke.

I’m not really a fan of this ticket process either, just sorting out facts though.

Oh, and to bundle on from the Gentry Academy controversy, they beat White Bear Lake last night in the section semifinals. WBL was the top seed in that section.

Gentry will play Hill Murray in the section final on Friday. Can they both lose?
