My oldest boy put the time in this past season (not that doesn’t always) but he has become quite the deer hunter. Sunday night I could not convince my 15-year old to go out but my 18-year old was already out and waiting. When he heard we were not going out, he changed his location and sat the double ladder stand that we knew had bucks around but had been all at night. About 4:20 I get the call and you knew when he was calling and not texting that he something down. A quick change of plans and I was off to the dairy farm to lend a hand and see just what we missed.
As the buck passed just about 10 yards behind and with the slightest snap of a twig, Zack caught movement in the corner of his eye and knew immediately this was a shooter. The buck had come up a trail almost directly behind the stand and moved slowly and quietly up the trail surprisingly downwind the whole time. As Zack raised the gun, the buck changed course and turned toward the field presenting him with a perfect 25 yard broadside shot. The kaboom and cloud of smoke from the TC was soon followed by the sound of the buck crashing just about 50 yards the woods.
Zack took his biggest deer yet, a great 12-point, and needless to say he was thrilled. Now it’s off to Buffalo County to see what else he can find….
