My buddy Yellab and I spent Sunday on the Missouri River near Niobrara. It was my first trip to the area and won’t be my last. We started throwing for bass, me a roadrunner with a white Mr Twister and Yellab with a spinner bait. We worked real hard for 5 fish the first couple of hours. Seemed to have some trouble boating fish. The first 3 bass that I hooked wiggled themselves off right at the boat. Then, we hit some deeper pools for catfish, but no takers except for one nice one that I caught on a shallow diving Shad Rap. Then we decided to go back to bass fishing and stopped at a spot that Yellab remembered held a pretty good batch of smallies in the past. For the next 90 minutes, we caught 20 or 25 smallies with the biggest being 17″. We also got a long skinny northern pike, a sauger and a walleye. Yellab also bowed 5 smallmouth buffalo averaging close to 11 pounds before we put the boat in the water.
It was a great day.
