Missouri River near Niobrara

My buddy Yellab and I spent Sunday on the Missouri River near Niobrara. It was my first trip to the area and won’t be my last. We started throwing for bass, me a roadrunner with a white Mr Twister and Yellab with a spinner bait. We worked real hard for 5 fish the first couple of hours. Seemed to have some trouble boating fish. The first 3 bass that I hooked wiggled themselves off right at the boat. Then, we hit some deeper pools for catfish, but no takers except for one nice one that I caught on a shallow diving Shad Rap. Then we decided to go back to bass fishing and stopped at a spot that Yellab remembered held a pretty good batch of smallies in the past. For the next 90 minutes, we caught 20 or 25 smallies with the biggest being 17″. We also got a long skinny northern pike, a sauger and a walleye. Yellab also bowed 5 smallmouth buffalo averaging close to 11 pounds before we put the boat in the water.

    It was a great day.

Oh boy, hanging out with Corey will usually get you in trouble….but not this time!

Glad to hear you guys had a great trip. I’ve seen a few people out here bowing for some carp, but don’t know how good their success has been.

CornHuska: If you be willing to share the details I’d sure like to know more about your trip. I won the NE BASS Federation State tournament this year and next June will lead Nebraska’s BASS Divisional team against the Centrial Division. As luck would have it next year it’s Nebraska’s turn to host that event against the other Centerial Division teams on the MO River up from Gavins Pt Dam. I fish the area you mentioned several times a year but we all seem to get stuck in a rut over time. Maybe you found something I’ve missed to add to next years list of things to try. Never can have too much information and I’d appreciate anything you’re willing to share.

    Thanks, Fluff

Not real sure on what details I can give you. Since that was my first trip, I doubt that I could find my way back to where we fished. When we got most of our bites, we were on the SD side of the river near some stumps.

Nice job! We need to have a little IDA bass outing on the Missouri River some day.

I’d be up for a IDA get together on the river.

Fish’n IA this weekend, MO the next, and NE BASS is on the river the 23rd that I’m in. Our club’s there 7/21 and the Creighton tournament is 7/28 I’ll most likely enter. Other than a weekend or two to check out down below before the Sioux City tournament 8/26 I’ll probably be up there poke’n around most of the other weekends. I’d like to know every nook and cranny before the BASS Divisional next year.

    If you’re up there holler.
