(FOX 9) – A vehicle that was reported missing in 1989 was recovered from the Mississippi River in Dakota County recently.

The Dakota County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook Monday a photo of a water-logged 1986 Mercury Cougar from near the Wakota Bridge boat launch on the Mississippi River.

The sheriff’s office sent a dive team to recover the vehicle after receiving reports from local anglers, who saw the vehicle on their sonars.

“By the looks of it, this car has been in the water for many years, possibly since it was first reported missing,” the sheriff’s office said.

A deputy hooked the vehicle on his first dive with “zero visibility,” the sheriff’s office said.

The Minnesota DNR assisted the dive team.

The sheriff’s office did not provide any information about the circumstances that led to the vehicle being reported missing in 1989.

Found 2, car and a truck in pool 15 Monday. One stolen in 2006, one in 2013. Folks playing with their new Panoptixs Livescope? Knew a guy ran across one 15 years ago with his Hummingbird.

Unless the driver is still in the car why bother pulling them up? That ’89 has been in the water 30+ years. Whatever damage it was going to do has been done. Waste of money IMO.

Likely because YouTube channels like Adventures with Purpose and others are telling people (especially fishermen) that if you see something call it in. And having the same vehicle called in over and over and investigated over and over is more of a waste of money/resources. So get it out not just to prevent the future waste, but to clean up, as well as if a new vehicle finds its way down there they will know its new and not 30 years old.

Maybe it was done for training for teams (Search and Rescue, etc.) that do that kind of recovery.

That is what was done on a lake near where I live when an angler with a camera unit just happened to lower his camera through the ice right on top of a snow machine that had been on the lake bottom for over 30 years.

. Possibly missing person ? Unsolved crime from long ago ? Who knows what it holds . Most likely nothing , but worth looking at .

1989 would have been before the flood wall and the current ramp / parking lot were built. The old boat landing was basically a gravel road that ended at the river under the bridge.

I would have to guess based on where that car has been sitting is it was driven out on the ice shelf and broke through. (Probably put in gear, jump out and see ya later…???)

Interesting. I’m sure I launched and idled past that car a hundred times.
Must’ve been just shy of the main channel.

I used to catch a lot of walleyes around that car.

Did you know what it was there or was it just another piece of structure?
