Over-the-counter and bulls-only. We were able to drive to our campsite. There was a pretty signficant amount of other hunters around, especially over the weekends – so that likely contributed to the bulls being a little more shy to closing the distance with the calling.

We used to hunt a different, much more remote area, but the wolves have decimated the herd there. We had wolves in this area too – heard some howling and had trail camera pics. Interesting how differently they manage them out there…as a non-resident I could have shot 5 wolves ($30 each).

Great hunt! I can’t wait for September 2013. Hope to have a similar experience!

Awesome recap of what must have been an amazing hunt! If you don’t mind me asking, what part of Idaho were you hunting? I have family out there somewhere and apparently I am welcome anytime for some hunting. However, it is extremely rugged where they are and from previous family members who have went before, it would be pretty tough with archery gear. Which makes me want to go more, because that means less pressure!

Wow, I’d think an arrow to the head of a large bull would just give him a headache for awhile. Thanks fo sharing!

We were hunting in the northern part of the state, that’s about as specific as I’m willing to get…It was very rugged country. Dropping (or climbing) 1200 feet of elevation over a mile hike was typical. And it’s heavily timbered. Willows choke the drainages. It is crazy tough on the body and even tougher on the gear.

I’m upgrading to a different sight – had issues with brush tearing at the fiber optics on mine. There’s no amount of being careful that could have prevented it.

It is exceptionally rugged country, which makes it an even better and more exciting hunt in my opinion.

That’s awesome! I guess my family hunts somewhere in the northern half. One cousin has went 4 times with rifle and not been able to tag out. He has said similar things about the terrain and it is way cool that you guys were able to connect with bow!!!6
