Heading up this weekend for my first Mille lacs ice trip in probably 10 years. Just curious as to what kind of live bait I should be bringing? I assume a few dozen fatheads for tipping spoons, but what else should I have for dead sticks and rattle reals? Also, any specific bait colors been better than others this year? Thanks in advance!!

This weekend it was smaller suckers for me on a plain red hook. Caught 80% of my fish on them. But they are hard to find..

By “smaller” Suckers you mean 3-4″ size? Thank you!

Yes, 3-5″ worked best. We did put some big pike suckers out and got a 26″ walleye with that also.

The folks at Trailside in Isle have been pretty nice about sorting out smaller suckers.

That’s where I stop for bait. Good people. Spendy, but minnows are everywhere..

I would try to get some shiners too. Majority of fish that we caught on tip ups and set line we’re on smaller shiners. You won’t be able to get them at the bait shops up north though…I usually grab them at a fleet farm in the metro.

It’s been a few weeks since we fished it but had the best luck on plain red hooks with minnow heads (jigging). Plain red hook with fat head or small sucker on tip up (hook through tail).

Thank you guys! I will try to pick up bait on the way so I don’t run into trouble up there.

We had good luck last weekend jigging live fatheads on small tungsten. Lot of snow on the lake, they liked the glow orange for us.
