Minnkota Terrova acting up all weekend with sporadic stopping

I have a 2013 Minnkota Terrova with very low hours on it. This past weekend while fishing sometimes while cruising along it would just stop, all other functions of the motor work fine, but nothing from the prop. Batteries are fully charged, connections are all good. I then noticed that if while it was out of the water and I manually turned the motor from the head unit I could get it to start/stop. I then had to get the prop spinning and then drop the motor down into the water to keep it running (sort of like a jump start)

Anybody else ever have this issue? Could it be a loose wire or bad solder in the head unit control board?

Yes. Almost exactly the same symptoms. Water leak in the motor. Had my motor replaced under warranty. Mine was a 2014.

    Is it a 36v?

I hope that’s not it but I’m afraid it is.

24 volt 80 lb thrust model, water leak in the lower motor part?

Yep, sounds like the motor itself needs opened up, cleaned up and possibly some parts replaced. Probably nothing wrong with the control head or remote.

I replaced the US2 in my 2010 Terrova this spring, adding new seals in the process. Rebuilding is fairly straightforward, took a little over an hour to get it back on the boat.

    Correct.

I’ve never been in there before but it sounds like it’s pretty straight forward if you are willing to dig in.

Mine had a clear mfg defect in the sealing area around the housing. The o-ring had zero chance of sealing because there was a notch in the seal surface.

thanks to everyone for the info, this motor probably has 15 or so hours on it since brand new, sucks that it failed…

That definitely sucks. Can I ask, how does your 6 year-old TM have only 15 hours of use?

ask my 2 kids (6 & 3 years old) and new lake property that was neglected for 10+ years… all the work is done now, finally have time for fishing ;)

I watched a few vids online, looks very easy to fix the likely bad gasket…
