I got a MinnKota 440 (4 bank automatic digital charger).. plug it in and the lights are Flashing Yellow, Red, Yellow, Red.. Keeps switching back and forth. It has a audible charging sound to it then a “click” sound when it turns to red. And then back to yellow and a charging sound. And back and forth like this till the end of time. Never goes green. Book doesn’t say anything about this cadence of error lights. Batteries are still warm in the cold storage building and cranking battery worked fine this weekend so it must be getting some juice??? Sat plugged in like that all winter long. Anyone with any insight would be appreciated.

My last boat I had a MinnKota 315 charger.. would be constant yellow while charging then turn to green and stay green. Cranking battery would turn right over to green because of the alternator on the motor obviously. I would consider that “normal” operation, But this one acts differently.

    Any guesses?
    Thanks

Do you have gel batteries, or an AGM battery? I know my charger came set for a lead battery from the factory and you have to change the setting manually for a different type. When you plug the charger in I think each bank will flash in yellow what type of battery it is set to charge.

It sounds a little bit like a breaker tripping, but that’s all I have to offer. Good luck figuring it out!

Are the other batteries completely discharged? They shouldn’t be since they were on the onboard all winter.

I had the same issue last year with a 2 bank charger, it was giving me the same code. One of 2 issues to look at:

1: The problem I had was my charger wasn’t working and needed to be replaced

2: I found out that if a battery is completely dead, that charger may not have enough juice to knock the battery to get it started and start taking a charge. This was the first thing I tried, I took out my volt meter and got a reading on my batteries, they were dead. Then I hooked the batteries up to a manual battery charger and got them up to over 12V, then when I plugged in the onboard everything seemed to be working properly. A week later I figured out my charger wasn’t working properly and it was replaced under warranty.

    Check these known 3 issues:

Batteries- Even if they are newer, did a cell freeze or did you leave the charger plugged in and got the batteries hot? Even maintenance mode will wreck a battery as they recommend using a timer. another issue I have ran into is brand new batteries being faulty.

Charger Issue- Get a volt meter and start taking some readings to make sure the Minnkota Charger is sending out the proper voltage to charge the battery

Wiring: Make sure your charger is wired propely, with the correct gauge wire. When you have your batteries fully charged, let them sit for a week and see if they hold a charge. You may have an outside source drawing on you batteries which is completely draining them which can give your onboard charger a hard time.
