That was before I moved to this area. It does not surprise me that they had them here. I could not remember how many metro areas installed them, but I know it was rather costly. Then again I’m sure it was tax payer money that paid to have them installed and removed. Its not like the government cared about the costly error.
I was speeding and got caught, now I am mad. LOL
Getting caught by a machine doesn’t sit right with me either.

If you are breaking the law and get caught, I don’t see how it matters if its by a person or a machine. With the way law enforcement is being treated by a lot of the people these days, I think they will need to use more and more machines to enforce auto laws. There is going to be a real shortage of live in person law enforcement at some point. Really sad but a reality these days.
Larger money grab than I thought. No data to support that the cameras reduce accidents. Can’t raise taxes in these areas so they get the additional revenue streams from out of state people. Sad and gives the whole State of Iowa a bad name
All of St Cloud is a crap show to drive through and it was known that people kept running red lights especially on 15 and division so they installed those cameras. It hasnt changed a thing and now they are gone. You can sit through a green light and see like 10 people running a red the other way. Its dangerous.
Thank you so much for your response!
We did figure out that this is a private company that gives big brother a share of the loot but none of this is coming from the authorities themselves-EVERYTHING about this deal is automated from a private company – what a RACKET!
Guaranteed, I will never set foot in Iowa again.
You speed in Iowa and get caught. Then whine about it. Don’t come to Iowa again.
Suits me fine.
you were caught speeding and got a ticket and now you dont think you should have to pay it? entitled much?
OK, so it sounds like most people want cameras everywhere.. ensuring nobody speeds. Then lets put them everywhere and if your 1 mph over, you get a ticket… after all, speeding is speeding. Agreed by all here ? (should also be cameras policing lakes/rivers and no wake zones too)
I vote NO, the cameras won’t work and will be under repair or out of calibration, if certain people get tickets, but not for others. No more big brother for this guy.
It would be an interesting experiment to drop all speed limits for a few years and then analyze the data.
especially on 15 and division
I read an article that the hwy 15 and 23 intersection in St Cloud is the single most violated intersection in terms of people running red lights in the entire state of MN.

I have no problem believing that. This town by far has the worst drivers of anyplace I’ve lived. Better be on your best defensive toes when driving around here.

I like when people think there are Laws that matter and Laws that don’t matter. The problem for me is who gets to decide what ones are and what ones are not. Many criminals believe serious crimes should not be against the law. Are they any more wrong than someone who feels driving even 1 mile over the speed limit is wrong? I guess the other options is to do away with all laws and let it return to the wild wild west days. There are some days I feel like I would not mind that all that much. To me laws are laws. If you don’t like them then do what you think is necessary to get them changed. Not just pick and choose what ones to follow and what ones not to follow. Just so we are clear I’m not in favor of any more big brother than anyone else. But if there are those who are not going to have common decency or respect for others its big brother control that’s going to happen. We live in a world with more and more evil people being born every day.
Lets be clear here. The OP never stated that they did not do what they were ticked for. Just that they felt entraped by being caught by a electronic device. They felt like by simply going with the flow of traffic that they were OK. My mom always use to say ” just because other around you are doing something does not make it ok to do it as well ” or ” if a lot of other people jump off a bridge and land on a rock – does that make it a smart thing to do ”
Wow, can’t believe more people don’t see this for what it is. A money grab by local government as they can’t obtain more tax dollars from their constituents. So everyone who says you violated the law so pay the fine must have never violated any law.
I am a data driven person and there is no data to support the idea that the cameras reduce accidents. All the cameras do is take money from people who don’t live in the area and put it into the local government coffers.
Exactly. I am pretty sure if there was an inquiry into their system, the mayor or some other person probably received a ticket and it was expunged from the system. Just sayin’

I’m not saying I never violated any laws. But when I did and was caught I fully expected to pay the fine. Which I did without bitching about it. So is the money grab because they collected money for a fine for breaking a law or because it was caught because of an electronic device rather than a live law enforcement officer. Just trying to understand your point of view

Big G – I normally agree with a lot of the points you make. I’m now starting to think you think everything done by the Government is a big conspiracy against every citizen. I’m not saying there is not some conspiracy’s happening but I don’t think everything is one. So per your comment you don’t think any one in the government has ever been found guilty or be ticketed and had to pay a fine? Just to be clear, do you really believe that ?

I agree.
Just a new revenue stream.
A money grab.
The cameras are in a 55mph zone. Either side of this zone is a 60mph limit. The signage coming from either direction includes:
– A traffic laws photo enforced sign at the city limits
– A yellow speed limit reduction ahead sign that also includes two red flags sticking out the top to further draw your attention to the sign
– A 55mph speed limit sign at the beginning of the 55mph zone. This sign also includes to two red flags out of the top and a sign below stating photo enforced
– Roughly 1000 feet after the speed zone change is the first camera
– Within the 55mph zone there are two standard 55mph signs (no red flags) and one 55mph sign with red flags and a photo enforced sign below
– Roughly 1000 feet after the photo enforced sign is the second camera
As previously noted, the ticket threshold is set at 12mph (20%+) over the speed limit and 39% of the tickets are issued to CR and Linn County residents. More revenue comes from locals than it does from other IA residents (25%) or those from out of state (36%).
There is a lot of signage and the limit is rather generous – not exactly entrapment. If it were an all out money grab they could have set the threshold lower than 12mph and made the signage more discrete.
The total revenue for Fiscal Year 2023 was $5,939,900 and was directed to public safety. This includes:
• Funding for 33 police officer positions ($4,100,000)
• ATE Service Provider and Collection Costs ($1,400,000)
• Public Safety Equipment (i.e. body camera maintenance support) and Designated Programs ($439,900)
12% over is rather generous. I wouldn’t be bitching about a ticket if that’s true. I subscribe to the 9 over you’re fine 10 you’re mine which is not 12% in most cases.

And if they raised taxes you would all still be complaining so there is that…I think Dutch found a new partner to discuss Friday night topics with.

Our 2 tier justice system is on display for anyone who wants to see it !!! Have you heard about all the “Sheriffs” who get pulled over and want out of their tickets ? How you got to every person in government gets out of tickets from what I posted, makes me think your reading comprehension is slipping too.

Is there data to support that speeding is good? Just seems like entitlement to me.
I do my 6-7 over and haven’t gotten a ticket in over 35 years.
To get two tickets for going at least 12 over in such a short time span is just pure entitlement.
While I’m totally against speed camera enforcement, if you were going a minimum of 12 over, and probably more, you deserve what you got. Heck, your fines should have been doubled for having two tickets that quickly.
