Minnesota River tips?

I’m doing a day paddle in my kayak from Henderson to Belle Plaine tomorrow. I grew up in this area and fished the river a lot, but mostly bottom fishing for cats and rough fish. I don’t plan on stopping for long periods of time or anchoring, so I probably wont do a lot of bottom fishing, but I do want to bring a casting rod and throw a few casts into fishy looking areas along the way (deadfalls, eddies, creekmouths) for maybe a walleye, stray pike or smallmouth.

I’ve heard jig and soft plastics is a good presentation. That Water is so muddy, thought maybe a google-eyed jig with a little rattle/vibration. Anyone have any advice on style of plastics or color. My fist thought is a twister or paddle tail, I figure the more motion the better in that water clarity but would love to hear what any experienced river folks recommend. Thinking white or Chartreuse for color?

Honestly a fish would be a bonus – really going to be alone in nature for a day, check out the colors, decompress etc. But if I’m going to haul the gear, I’d like to at least make a good effort.

I’d grab some small cranks with rattles in them. Dirty water that would be my first choice.

Little rat l traps or rippin raps….maybe some # 5 jointed raps.

I’d have a rod set up with a bottom bouncer, crawler harness, and spinner. Probably need a 3oz if you’re moving pretty well but you might be able to catch a walleye or two. Most fish like the bottom in a river. The fish you’re casting in towards shore like the bottom they’re just in shallower.

Well, the river was so low that the water level had receded well below the access ramp and left about 5-10 ft of Minnesoata River Muck between the ramp and the water. So I left the yak on the truck and grabbed my bottom rig. Went through 24 nightcrawlers from the bank. It was a blast and reminded me if growing up. Probably caught 15 fish – 4 different species. Mostly small Channel Cats, but had about an 8 pound carp take me on a couple runs and even got a couple walleye. Made me happy the original plans fell through!
