I wasn’t going to post this, but thought that I probably should just to warn anyone who might do future business with this guy.

I bought this motor from him back in April, and immediately went to install it. Found multiple issues with it that he failed to address including a leaking lower unit and a broken bolt in the frame that helped lock the up/down mechanism in place. Finally I was able to make a trip through Mankato to have Minnkota take a look and start the rebuild. All said, these repairs cost me about $200. When someone advertises a motor with a description of “Like new”, I expect it to be just that.

More than anything though, I’m angry with myself for trusting him and not doing a more thorough examination of the unit before handing over the cash.

If this post violates any of the forums rules, please feel free to remove it. I just felt it was my responsibility to warn anyone who might possibly do business with him in the future.

Thanks for the heads up nobody likes to be taken. I agree like new should be just that. Best of luck with future use. I have purchased through classified here and always received what was advertised. Hopefully this will help any future transactions with Rodger.

The only thing that I’d like to know is if you contacted him about the issues?

Definitely give the guy the opportunity to make it to make it right.

I did call him a few days after I’d learned about it. He really didn’t have anything to say. It was an odd phone call with not much being said on the other end other than “Well I didn’t know it was broken”. No offer to make things right.

I just expect someone to be a big enough man to own up to their own mistakes. But since that didn’t happen, I bit the bullet and got it repaired.

I will still use the classifieds moving forward, but I will absolutely be a little bit more attentive to what I’m purchasing.

Sorry to hear this. I personally have had some great transactions, selling and buying, via the IDO classifieds. But this is good reminder to us all.

yeah thats annoying. i bought the same model from a guy off classifieds from another site. but he certainly advertised it properly. he basically said its totally screwed up and was selling it for parts after he got the bad news from MK that it needed about 500-600 in repairs. would of ended up investing like you about a grand in the whole unit after repairs. However, i was able to repair much of it myself without buying new parts. about 30-40 bucks into it, the thing is running like a champ with a few quirks here or there.

the guy was terrified of selling it to me because he didn’t want tme to accuse him if i couldn’t get it working but we had good contact throughout.

selling in classified ads is tough because its always he said, she said. This guy has 8 posts to his name so thats always something that makes me be extra cautious.

    CLARIFICATION.
THIS 60 INCH UNIT WORKED FINE WHEN THE UNIT WAS TAKEN OFF THE BOAT IN APRIL BY THE MECHANIC. IT RAN FINE AND THE LOCK/UNLOCK UNIT WORKED FINE. I PURCHASED A ULTERRA DUE TO A SHOULDER INJURY. MY BOAT AND EQUIPTMNET IS TAKEN CARE OF AND ALWAYS STORED INDOORS.

HE CALLED ME AND SAID IT WAS TOO LONG AS HE HAD NOT MEASURED HIS BOAT. SO HIS FIX WAS TO CUT IT OFF THE SHAFT. NOW I DONT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED BETWEEN APRIL AND SEPTEMBER WITH THIS UNIT. BUT IT WORKED FINE WHEN IT WAS DELIVERED.

    There’s always two sides…
A man’s reputation can be damaged pretty easily. This would have been better left between the two parties.
