Minn Kota Riptide 70/80 Frankenstein

I’m new here and don’t know much terminology so bare with me please…. I bought a used Minn Kota 70lbs thrust saltwater riptide tiller handle style and it worked fine for a while then went out on me, so I took it to 2 shops both of them told me the lower unit was burned up and it wasn’t worth replacing. So me being the stubborn mule that I am started looking around on Craigslist and found a lower unit and shaft that somebody had taken the top off of and cut the wires, it was $20 so I bought it. It was from an 80lbs thrust saltwater riptide with the tiller handle. I was hoping to hook that up to the top that I have from the 70. Is there a world where that works?

The shaft and lower unit from the 80 only has the red and black wires coming out of the shaft as far as I can tell(I cut the shaft about 6” to see if there were any other wires but I didn’t find any), but the top of the 70 has an extra yellow wire and a white wire coming out. I decided to try it anyway, did a quick test and twisted together the red wires and the black wires and it runs but only at full blast forward and full blast backwards. On the 70 it looked like the yellow and white wires were just grounds maybe, looked like they were just welded to the metal of the lower unit, so I am not sure what to do with those. I took a picture of how I rigged it up for the test run, idk that you can tell anything from it but I am happy to take some more pictures if that would help.

Is there something I should do with the yellow and white wires? Any easy way to get the speed control back? Am I guna kill myself trying to get this to work? Does this make any sense?

    Thanks in advance!

Is the 70 a 12 or 24 volt? The 80 is 24 volt I am pretty sure so if the 70 is 12 volt you are going to have issues and would probably have to replace the board at the top of the motor. Just my initial guess.

    Nathan,
Looking thru the Minn-Kota manuals online, it appears as though your 70# used a 5-speed switch, the 2-wire 80# appears to use a circuit board to provide variable speeds.

In order to use the 2-wire 80# motor, you may need to upgrade your control.
