Milwaukee timing out?

I have had a Milwaukee drill (the one with 1200 lbs torque) with a clam plate and 7″ laser bit for several years and recently it’s been shutting off on me, like timing out? I let it sit for a few minutes and it works just fine again. This was an intermittent problem the other day as it did it on several occasions while drilling holes. Anybody else have this issue?

Never owned the drill but if u keep having the prob i would check with milwaukee and see if its under warranty. Warranty period is usually 5 years their customer service is fantastic.

What do you mean by timing out? Is it shutting itself off while in use? If the battery lights flash when that happens it’s because the current draw has exceeded capacity.

Possibly blades getting dull? Possibly battery getting old and weak?

    What battery are you using?

I’m using the 5 amp hr batteries I’ve used since new. The bit is still pretty sharp. If I stay on the trigger it doesn’t stop. But sometimes when I let off it just decides to not work for awhile.

    Sounds like it is overheating.

Can’t be overheating, sometimes it does it on the first hole.

Most likely, either the drill or the battery is overheating.
Could also be the trigger isn’t receiving a good contact and needs to be disassembled and cleaned.

Or, the battery contacts are dirty

I was hoping someone else had a similar occurrence.

I own 3 of those same drill heads and have had the same happen to mine. Once the battery’s get around 3 years old, they are much more prone to stop, blink. and/or overheat. This is more common with the smaller 5 amp battery’s and I have went through over a dozen of them. I have also had the shifter slide into a torque setting which will cause the drill to stall out with any decent load. Once the battery’s get weak they will die out in seconds and still blink 3-4 bars.
I would carry another battery with to verify if thats the issue first.

I will try a few different things and contact Milwaukee as well. Thanks for everyone’s input on this.

Clear the blades if over 12-18 inches of ice and put new blades on it. Most problems are dull blades.

Same thing happening with me and 5ah batteries. I have had it/them for about 7 years and it does help to have very sharp blades.

If the drills are “Fuel” get rid of those weak 5ah and get either the 6,8 or 12ah HO’s. They will be a world of difference and last longer.

I see for $150 I can get a Hercules 1200 lb drill with a 8 amp battery and charger. Wondering if I should ditch the Milwaukee, haven’t been impressed with Milwaukee since I purchased a separate 4 tool kit.

Do whatever you want, but it isn’t the drill. Batteries go bad, when they start going bad the amp draw on it goes up in order to feed the drill, when the amp draw reaches the limit of the internal computer of the battery it shuts itself down to protect it and the drill. You are also using old technology XC5.0’s that are basically given away. The High Output (HO) batteries are worlds better than the XC batteries ever were. The drill will feel like it has twice the power with a HO battery.

BTW – I’ll take the drill off your hands if you’re getting rid of it. smirk

I discovered my original 5-amp batteries were bad first trip out this winter. Got 4 seasons out of them. Last trip out last year, I ran them pretty hard overheated both. Didn’t think much of it, recharged them when I got home. Topped them off over the summer. First trip out this year pistol bit would turn but no power, like the battery was going dead but it showed full power. Swapped battery out, same thing with battery two. Barely got 3 holes in 5 inches of ice. Tried a buddies brand new 6-amp battery and it was fine. Bought 2 new 6-amp batteries had have probably ripped 1000 holes this season, no problem. Batteries go bad.

So it sounds like it’s the batteries as they are at least 3 years old. I was just thinking about the price on a 8 amp battery is probably as much as the whole Hercules setup. I’ll have to do some research on Milwaukee battery prices. Thanks again for all the info.

I would definitely look for a sale on the Milwaukee batteries before I downgraded to a Hercules

Just found a place that has 2 6.0 high output Milwaukee batteries for $150. Would these batteries suffice for the ice auger drill?

Yes, and a much better plan than a cheap drill.

I get all of my Milwaukee batteries on eBay. After 4 years, my 12HD went bad (also bought on eBay in 2019 for $146 shipped). I replaced it this season with an 8.0 Forge battery for $130 shipped. The 12ah Forge is $179. I’d rather spend the extra 30 bucks for the 12ah forge over the 2 6ah batteries. More power in the 12.

I’ve drilled probably 30 holes this season on the 8.0 Forge and it still shows full. I use a steel 8” StrikeMaster Lazer on a Clam Plate.

That add says buy 2 6.0 Milwaukee batteries for $279 and get one free.

    Update on the Milwaukee drill.

I just purchased 2 6.0 high output batteries and took it to the lake today for a test run. It still times out almost anytime I let go of the trigger, whether it’s after 2″ of drilling or 18″ of drilling. If I don’t let off the trigger it never stops. So apparently it’s not the batteries.

I never drill anything but full throttle. Are you saying you let off the trigger a little it stops?

I always have to let off the trigger to readjust recently or would damn near be on my knees with the ice so thick. Never had an issue. 12ah batteries.

If I let off the trigger to clear ice shavings with my boot. I always use full depression on the trigger when drilling a hole. Lots of ice this year so stopping drilling to kick the mound of shavings is almost required.
