Taking my son to ML tomorrow for his first time. He’s pretty excited and I’d like to get him on some tullibees. Normally, I’d be willing to move around a bunch, but for his sake I’ll bring along the pop-up to sit in, which will slow us down a bit.

What I’m wondering is, if you’ve been on Mille Lacs lately, where in general are you running into tullibees? Don’t need your coordinates or anything, but would appreciate anything that will help me narrow down my search. Help me put a smile on my kid’s face! mrgreen

    TIA

When I was there 2 weeks ago, I caught a bunch of them just off the mud flats. Didn’t seem to matter which one. I was always pulling them in.

Deep. I’ve been catching them in 28′ plus. I’m hearing the best bite is in the deepest water you can find near a flat or reef, like mid-30’s. Sherman’s Flat has some super deep breaks like that. I’m not sure if any of the resorts are plowed out that far since it busted up pretty good a few weeks ago. Randy’s was having plow troubles as of last week. Rocky Reef maybe.

Not sure if you’ve decided yet since you’re going tomorrow?

If you’re still looking to narrow down your search, maybe check with Lybacks. This is their road map and there’s good reason there’s what’s called the “tullibee hole” there in the middle. 40 feet I think but they’re somewhere in the middle.

Thanks, all. I’ve recently heard/read a lot of different things, so this helps. I called around and it does sound like some resorts are struggling with their roads right now. I think I have a spot identified for tomorrow.

And thanks, Andy. I happened to call Lyback’s today because I’ve heard about the “tullibee hole” but never been there. Whoever it was I talked to (young woman, name maybe started with M?) said the hole isn’t doing anything special, and might start getting good in a couple weeks.

Hope to have some pics to share tomorrow night!

Jigging spoons. I prefer buckshot spoons because they fall fast. I’ve triggered lots of tullie bites by letting them chase 10+’ and then dropping it as fast as possible 10+’ back down.

small castmaster spoons the kind where half is shiny and half is brightly colored-hook with a euro-action brings them in-scent sells it. Like any other fish if the bite is really on, any spoon will work-if the bite is off nothing works-if the bite is just so so many will say ‘they are not biting’ but really it just takes some coaxing and finnese. When the bite is a little off if you are in a good spot you will still see one or two every ten minutes. They come you do your dance and you get one out of three of these fish. So in a few hours you can have a pretty good pile of fish at a time of day when not much else is happening-good fun, hope I can chase them again this year.

when they are chasing, but not actually biting we will go blue silver Kastmaster a dropper 2-4 inches with a tiny jig head loaded with waxies or spikes

My favorite is an orange #10 Tungstun Toad. Spoons are fun but they need to be much more aggressive. An orange jig and a couple waxies in my experience has been the best for me year after year.
