Thinking of heading up to the pond tomorrow morning to try for some smallies, any tips for a Mille lacs…novice.

I have a variety of plastics, any specific cranks you guys like for casting? Any specific depths or just try to find some rock piles?

Probably unconventional, but I had an absolute blast and pounded the smallies in aug on submerged rock piles on the north end using a lindy set up with leech. I didn’t need to drift much. (I’m pretty sure I could have won the bass masters tourney that day LOL)

Anywhere you would fish early season walleyes on rock piles, that’s where I’d start for smallies in aug (9’-16’).

Don’t be afraid to drag plastics through the same areas. This pattern will hold through October

We could not get on the smallie patern this weekend. The dumb walleyes wouldn’t stay away. 8 to 15 ft. Was pretty 50/50 on walleye to bass. Using lipless clackin raps. Lots of fish

Ned rigs, hair jigs and tubes work all year. Jig and craw should work well now.

You definitely would not have won since they prohibit the use of any live bait.

Speaking of bass masters the hair jig (marabou)played an integral part with some of top anglers in the Elite Tourney this week. Probably the most under utilized lure out there. As good as it catches smallmouth the walleyes like it even more.

Thanks for the tips everyone! My trip got shut down again, but I am for sure heading up this coming Monday, and hoping to go up either Saturday or Sunday as well.

    I will post a report!

Leave the cranks in the box. Break out tubes and neds or straight texas rigged worms. Black with blue or red flake tubes were the best for us on rocks in 8-15 fow two weeks ago. Got my buddy on his PB at 4’11”

I was their all last weekend. And we did good. The weekend before was tubes neds and nekos, last weekend was lipless cranks ripn raps, and my number 1 was clackin raps. So deffinatley dont leave the cranks in the box. All our biggest and more aggressive fish came this way. In the rocks from 10 to 15 ft. And plenty plenty of nice walleyes as well
