Mille Lacs SMB 16Aug2015 – Where was everybody today? The lake was vacant.

Wow, we couldn’t believe how vacant Mille Lacs was today. Spent the day SMB fishing and only saw a handful of boats on the entire lake today. I understand Walleye fishing is closed but it seemed like even the Bass and Muskie guys had vacated the lake too.

Started at the Malmo public access and there wasn’t one rig in the lot. Because of the West winds we decided to trailer over to Garrison. There was only one rig in the Garrison parking lot when we got there. We even caught the AIS guy sleeping in his rig and had to give a quick toot on the horn to awake him.

We basically had the lake to ourselves today. Fishing was OK but nothing special by Mille Lacs standards. Numbers were pretty good but couldn’t seem to find any big fish. Our best pattern was drop shotting tubes in 10 to 12 FOW adjacent to rock piles.

One of my pictures is of the Garrison public access today. I have never seen it that vacant on a Sunday.

We took a drive around the lake last evening and I saw the same thing. Even though it was a work night there should have been some boats at the landings. Sad days for the resort industry here.

This just further justifies the fact the smb and musky fishing will not fill the void of walleye fishing. It is nice being able to fish without having somebody pull up in front of you and cut you off from the rest of the spot.

We talked with a guy planning on muskie fishing that said there hadn’t been any boats to speak of on the lake the entire week. If your aim is to chase muskie or SMB you may not find this amount of limited pressure again.

The third week of August is the #1 family vacation week of the year (higher than spring break which is staggered over 6 weeks for most parts of the country). Many people are at the Dells, cabins, fairs, golf outings, etc. Or sadly, more Americans (primarily younger) are inside doing something electronic instead.

I myself am planning on spending most of the month of September on Mille Lacs fishing for (and releasing) as many bronzebacks as I can after the kids are all back in school and I have some extra free time that I don’t now (been on a family vacation myself)…
