    Hi all….
I was pondering a trip to Mille Lacs this weekend to chase some smallies. I know the lake pretty well from lots of walleye fishing out there and a few musky trips.

I’ve never actually targeted small mouths before so just looking for a shove in the right direction from those of you that chase them up there once in a while. I have a fair amount of bass gear from years of fishing largemouths so I am covered pretty well with plastics(tubes, creatures, worms) and crank baits.

Is there an area of the pond that is more known for smallies than others?
Should I be focusing on shallow 4-8′ deep rock piles/points this time of year or even shallower yet than that?
I would think starting with a crank to cover water is a good approach and once we find some switch over to plastics to get the less aggressive fish.

Any info would be appreciated….Saturday looks like it’s going to be a pretty nice day to be out so thought I should take advantage of it.

Shallow rocks should be good. Especially if you get some wind blowing in. I would try xraps and shallow shad raps. My favorite areas are depending on where you put in.. NorthWest Garrison Bay area. Done well casting and drifting bobbers and leeches for nice smallies over there. Also East side .. Doe Island area in SUNSET BAY is loaded with giant smallies. If you get wind in there, there can be a nice mixed bag of EYES in there also.

    Good luck, post photos!

I’ve had pretty good luck with Cotton Cordell Big O’s in the 2″ size. You can’t go wrong with any of the crayfish colors. I’ve also tossed the white one with some success. Good luck to you!

Mark fisher was filming in cove bay yesterday. Then he went somewhere around the point and the film crew left. I haven’t fished them outside of the bay yet this year. Cove bay has been pounded hard since the opener. Almost as bad as back a few years when the musky guys were out in force, take a number at each spot.
