Mille lacs perch

I can’t catch any of them and hate them all equally

rotflol I was in your hood last night and actually caught a limit of specks. Felt good seeing that the last(and first) two trips I caught a grand total of one 6 inch bluegill…

I would’ve called ya but we didn’t even get started until well after dark. Almost broke my leg, too, which was cool. Happy bday to me I guess!

Now that this perchy bite is no longer a secret I have a couple questions:

How did they get so big so fast?

What is the consensus depth to target perch?

I’m guessing there isn’t much C&R going on with these and they are in 30 feet or more. That accurate?

Perch grow fast and live short lives to begin with but we were catching jumbos out there 3 years ago, just kept it pretty quiet. Combine that with 2 poor winters in a row for vehicle and castle traffic they were left alone.

~30ft off the edges of the flats

Mostly accurate. Fishing in 30+ the majority have their stomachs in their mouth anyways. Might as well eat them.

People say they are cyclical but I personally can’t help but feel the boom cycle is going to be much shorter.

Maybe but these fish being caught have already had several spawning seasons. Now will the record walleye hatch be able to feed every fish in the lake. Only time will tell. Lake is pretty dang healthy right now.

Which is amazing considering only 10 months ago dnr said there was no forage in the lake

I fished it 2 winters ago and all we had on camera was 5 to 7 inch perch and there were hundreds of them just under one wheelhouse.

I figured the eyes must be eating real good out there but it seems the perch are eating much better.

Now I’m debating making a trip up there in March so I don’t miss a once in a generation bite?

I just don’t know if this bite is better than what we have had on the pools of the Sippi for decades already……hmmmm?

I was googling that a 13 inch perch is 10+ years old. Obviously that depends on many factors and can vary. But I’ve been trying to figure out why that perch bite just started, because they’ve been there several seasons minimum. I started catching them in numbers this past summer and thought I was catching a mythical unicorn, now it’s the only thing in the lake that’s really biting. The last two ice seasons not being great is certainly plausible. But the DNR saying there were no perch in the lake was less than the truth.

I think the average lifespan of a perch is 7 years.

They hatched in 21-22. Perch grow fast and generally live 4-6 years.

If they can grow that fast in just a few years it could be very good for the lake.

Good sign that the perch of fabled lore at this lake are thriving once again. They create an ideal food source for many of the lake’s game fish.

We always did best 28′ and deeper. It’s best if your fishing the soft stuff. PS this doesn’t always mean the mud although they are there too.

Same as anything. If you want good ones, you have to fish where it hasn’t been hammered. Get on something that hasn’t been beat up, get off of the structure and go to work, on em.

Anybody headed out this week? I think I’ll give it a go on Thursday. Went out of Hunter’s both trips earlier. Might give a different shore a try.

Anyone catch a freak jumbo out there recently? Like a 15 incher?

Biggest I saw out there was way back in 2004 when I was an intern for the DNR. It was a 16 1/4 incher.

My buddy caught a 14.5″, which was the biggest I’ve seen in quite a while.

POP I had another buddy up last weekend and sounded like it was moving more towards a morning/evening bite. They marked all midday but didn’t catch anything until about 3-330, and a neighbor said the morning was good.

    Thanks BigWerm.

I might go both tomorrow and Thursday. Gonna be brisk getting setup for morning bite when it’s all of -17° at 7am.
Where did your buddy head out of? I’ve never gone out from Red Door, but I’m thinking about it.

Work is so busy I don’t even get to fish on the weekends

I am guessing with the size structure of the perch and anglers pursuing them that many resorts will keep their roads maintained longer this year. This might help them make up some of their lost revenue from last winter.

I have a couple of buddies trying to drag me out on Thursday. Brrrr. If it was not for a 2 hour drive I would fish it more often. Not sure of where we are going out of to fish. They seem to be chasing some hot spot rumor…

Hunters. I’m sure you’d do just as well out of Red Door, or anywhere that can access the mud.

Well, sounds like I might do Wednesday and Thursday on the pond. Probably just start tomorrow morning out of Hunter’s and go in the area they circle on the map. Atleast for the first couple hours. After that I’ll move about. I’ve got a couple areas I want to try for evening way out in the middle. Then we’ll adjust for Thursday.

    Remember crowds kill the bite.
Branch away from people, find your own ground. It’ll turn a 20 fish day in to one of them 200 fish days.

    Absolutely. waytogo

I like a minimum of 100 yard buffer. I don’t intend on being close enough to anyone that we know if each other are catching anything.

I should say last time out, there was atleast 4-5 drones flying around. Most likely spying on people. As everytime they would pause over us for 30 seconds. Should be illegal for multiple reasons. Lowest of low in my opinion.

Give them the weiner copter. They will stop looking at you.

Is there a minimum blade size to make the copter effective? Asking for a friend.
