I have a week trip planned for opening week on Mille Lacs. Is there a chance there will be open water? Should I change my trip dates? Are there any other options to fish around the area if I can’t get out on the big pond? Thanks

History says youll be fishing on the lake in a boat…my eyes say otherwise.

It’s gonna be close but your guess is as good as anyone’s!

There was 30+ inches of ice yesterday afternoon. 24 days till opener. Not going to happen in my opinion and opinion of other long time Mille Lacs residents.

There should be other smaller/shallow area lakes open. For example Knife lake about 20 minute drive south of Isle.

    Good luck,

Plenty of small lakes around the area that might be open, but there is no way in H E double hockey stick Mille Lacs will be open. I hope I have to eat my words. I have already made other plans for another area and I have been on ML for opener since 1990.

Very slight chance you could troll the shoreline for opener…just watch out for the shifting ice sheet…

…..and then what? Hold on tight while your boat is crushed into the shoreline rocks??? Sorry, terrible advise IMO. Just ask the guys who got caught out there during the 2013 opener. The rescue bill from the county was over $4k.

I guess my post wasn’t taken as a joke, which it was…

SO. In complete seriousness, it was a poor joke and is not recommended by me…if that matters in the least bit…

Sorry, I didn’t see this as a joke. wave

I’m assuming the original poster is not a Mille Lacs regular. I would hate to see anyone trying this.

Amazing except for the talking-amazing sound if you ever hear it-thousands of chandalier pieces of ice rolling on each other.(would I have talked? well probably)

I’m excited to try out the new rig. It’s got a great hole shot, trailering sucks though. peace

This is from 2013, there was a house that got buried very close to where I’m at that sat much lower. The wind and subsequently the ice sheet pushed back to the north when the wind whipped up from the south. Think this might be it…
