Mille Lacs newbie

Looks like I have a pass to head to Mille Lacs for the first time even if only for a brief window. Never fished it before. I can likely be at the south end by 2:30pm Saturday and need to leave Sunday around 10:00am. 1/2 ton and wheelhouse.

Any particular southern resort I should head out of? Preferably one who could point me to a spot.

I only have spikes and crappie minnows on hand – should I get something else? I will run rattle reels at night.

    Thanks!

We had our best luck with sucker or big rainbows with plain hooks on rattle wheels. That was out of Hunters. I’ll be up again Monday in their big 16×36. toast

Maybe I could ask another noob question because I have used a rattle reel all of one time. How far off the bottom should I put the minnow and how far up should I place the split shot weight?

I have mine set up with rattle reel line, a mono leader, and bare red hooks.

Glad to hear they were productive – I need to do some work too and might not be able to actively fish a ton.

We came up today, got here at about 11 went out of Lyback’s on the South East corner. First time using there access. Good direction about where to go from the lady in the office. She seems like someone that doesn’t like to be rushed. Set up in 32. Got a couple on jigging raps. Had a few lookers that didn’t bite. Just set up on a reef about a hour ago. Got one on a sucker on a rattle reel. We plan on running suckers on rattle reels over night. PM your number if you want and I can give some more details or help you out with a spot.

Will send a PM – I actually spoke with the lady at Lyback’s and was planning using them because she was quite nice (and they are right off 169).

Lybacks is good, I have rented sleepers from them a couple different years. Not quite right off 169 though. Closer to Isle. Still not far if you go up 169, the intersection where you would turn is right where Lundeen’s Tackle Castle is. Stop there for suckers and big shiners.

I overbooked myself last fall with hunting trips. I’ll try not to do it again this year if you go. waytogo

No fish overnight. I guess we will have to try to pick a better spot tonight.

Good call! Would have been a bummer without them.
