What GPS do you have? Do you have a smartphone? Based on the answer to those two questions someone can provide you the options available to you because not all options are available to all brands of GPS, etc.

    Steve Hale:

I was going to download Navionics to my smart phone (Apple), and I also have it on my droid. I do not have a dedicated gps… I did not download it to my apple as I had it on my droid and new Lowrance Elite Ti9. I told the guy at Navionics that I had sold enough of their product over the bar in the resort up here that I should be on their prostaff!!! It didn’t work to get any of the upgrades.

It seems to make the most sense to me to use navionics for ice fishing… I have friends who have both lakemaster and navionics… bitch about both and thus, I don’t really think it makes a really big difference. I am amazed at how close Navionics is in most cases on my phone. Four years ago, I couldn’t afford to upgrade my onboard gps/sonar unit for a trip to Lac Seul, so added the app to my droid as it was all I had. I actually used it for most of my exploring, downloading the mapping before getting to Lac Seul and resting it on my tummy while we navigated around brand new areas of that lake for the first time. Once I had laid trails on my old sonar/gps, I was able to utilize my eyes and trails for navigation using my sonar and eyes when we got into questionable water.

There are going to be times wheree it is not adequate, but IMHO… those will not happen often.

I start with Tutt’s map in my living room, (It has GPS coordinates on it.)
From there I let my helix guide me to a spot I have identified on the map.

The Tutts seems interesting. . .Do they still produce it?

I have to admit I like the old school way of doing things.

    Thanks for the info

I believe you can still get them at the Tutt’s Baitshop, but otherwise not sure.
Based on the GPS units you have, the only option you have is Navionics and Garmin does have mapping, but you would likely have to download because its typically loaded right into the device (assuming you are talking about a Garmin GPS/Depthfinder). If its a handheld Garmin, I am not aware of anything for that.

Navionics does have a web app that you can pre-plan your outing, its free to use. But you cannot see any GPS coordinates, you must use their app or a chip in a device.

Here is a link to the web app, in the lower left hand corner of the screen there is a little bubble allowing you to switch level of detail, put that on “Sonarcharts” because that will have the most detail.
