Mille Lacs later this week — where to walk out, best bait?

Looks like the resorts are opening back up to walkers, atvs, and sleds. Planning to walk out on Thursday and would love some suggestions. I don’t mind paying an access fee if it means a shorter walk to good structure.

Also — what’s working in terms of bait and presentation. Shiners -vs- suckers, spoon sizes?

Thanks in advance for any wisdom you can offer. First time ice fishing ML!

I think you were on the right track with Agate.

    Thanks guys!

    — how big are you going on the suckers right now? I have some 5 inchers but will make a stop to buy the big guys if that’s the ticket.

I like the 5″ers with a Sure hook in their back, I missed a lot of fish on larger suckers because I did not have the right hook set up.

Cool. The biggest sureset I have right now is the size 4 which should be about perfect for the 5 inch suckers.

5 should be fine. I use a little different set up with the smallest VMC treble I can find. Not sure on size. May want to check with agate about walking out there as there Facebook says they have some bad slush close to shore. Other walkable spots are red door barnacles garrison sports rocky reef.

Thanks again! I did see Agate’s FB post. I’m hoping by Thursday that near-shore area will be in a little better shape. Sounds like they are packing it down and hoping today’s cooler temps will do the trick. But I’ll make some calls on the way up to confirm conditions.

4-5″ suckers are the perfect size.

Not sure if it makes any difference, but I tail hook them with plain hook or sometimes with a jig. I’ve rarely lost any that way but I usually wait a bit before setting the hook.
