Mille Lacs First Timer – Need Advice!

My girlfriend and I are planning to head up to Mille Lacs next weekend for some Walleye fishing and we have never fished it or stayed anywhere near it so we are looking for any advice possible about the following things…

    – Reasonable priced hotels that are not run down (we are 22 years old!).

    – I’m not looking for secret spots but just general ideas on where to locate the Walleye on the lake (we are not using any guide services).

    – What do the Walleye feed on in Mille Lacs for lure selection.

Any other advice you can think of is much appreciated!

I am doing a lot of research myself but I love this forum a lot and thought I could find some help here as well!

    Thanks!!

Couple options for the rooms, check out The Red Door on the north end:
    http://www.thereddoorresort.com/motels.html

or McQuiods on the SE corner:

Many of the more popular reefs and flats will now have permenant houses out. That should help get you in the right neighborhood. Most resorts offer staked roads and maps to fishing areas for a $10 fee. Remeber to drive slow and don’t punch holes near roads perm shacks.

Jigging spoons tipped with minnow head or live minnow under tip ups or bobber rigs are always a good start.

    Good luck out there!

Thanks Jon! I will definitely take a look at those two and keep those tips in mind, I appreciate it!

I heard ice thickness is 17-20 inches, is this true and have people been driving trucks out there?
