Spent a few days at the Red Door for some much needed R&R. The weather cooperated and so did the fish! With all the doom and gloom surrounding this lake, it felt like a ghost town and I basically had every spot to myself.

We had our best luck pulling spinners with leeches really slow out on the first couple breaks on the north end. The mud bite I think, is still a week or so away….I marked a few fish, but most seemed to be stacked up closer to shore still. We did manage to pull a few nice ones off the mud via bobbers though. Last night we anchored up in 15fow on the rocks at about 7pm. We didn’t get a bite until 815, but it was game on until 930. We probably boated close to 20 fish. Lots of little guys, but a few slots, numerous 15-17 inchers and a couple big ones with a 25 and 26 respectively.

I’m looking forward to great summer of fishing and will be up there as much as I can. The resorts and businesses need our support. Contrary to some of the negative reports or opinions….the fish are biting and the future looks good. Get up there and fish!

Thanks for report, glad to hear there are several year classe’s showing up.
It is a great fishery, and I am sure it will rebound with a little time.

Well said, Brian! It’s shaping up to be a pretty good year. Headed up later today for a long weekend. Can’t wait!

Great to hear the bite is still good. Hoping to head to the mud this weekend for the first time this year. I have gotten my fill of the rocks for now and ready for a good mud bite. Thanks for the report!!

The only thing good I ever caught was nice 20 inch smallmouth on just about any rock pile using live bait.Try it.

Was up to the lake Fri – Mon. I can confirm the spinner/crawler bite has started to go. Surface temps just hitting the 70 degree mark during the afternoon. There is a lot of yoy minnow/perch in the system right now. The spinners seemed to be just the trick to trigger a bite. Working the deeper breaks in 24–27 feet. Corking and rigging did not produce well for me. Did not spend any time trolling deep cranks.. All of my crank trolling was in 10 FOW or less. That bite was “just ok…” Keeper slots were illusive.

Thanks for the update Jon. Can’t wait to get back there…just rigged up a couple more bouncer rods. I’m also going to give the new VMC lighted bobbers a try….really like the fact that the batteries can be replaced, something I thought the Splash Brites lacked.

I never got to the mud, but we caught several eyes just under the 19″ mark and absolutely crushed the smallies. All pulling cranks over shallow rocks 6-10′ Monday alone we got 7 smallies over the 18″ mark with the biggest just a touch over 20″ Time of day had no barring, we caught fish in the am, 10am to 2pm and evening. Lots of action.
