Spent the past weekend with my brother-in-law and a high school buddy in Kansas chasing Blue Cats in Milford Reservoir, just outside of Junction City. Being our first trip to this body of water we hired a guide on Friday (Ryan Gnagy runs Prime Time Catfishing) to speed up our learning process.
Ryan taught us more in a day’s guide trip than we could have learned in a month of trying to do it on our own. He covered everything from A to Z, but the most beneficial things for me were: sitting back and watching a professional use his electronics, a new knot for my circle hooks, and how easy a pro makes throwing a cast net look! We ended up catching around 25 for the day, biggest was 22lbs.
Went back on Saturday with my new boat to take our sons out for their first try at blue cats. After spending Friday with Ryan and seeing what it took to anchor his boat in the wind and waves, I was concerned that I didn’t have the correct equipment on board to be able to setup where the fish would be. Turns out I didn’t have the right anchors so that made for a long day of trying less than spectacular spots to get a few fish hooked up for them. Only caught 4 on Saturday with the biggest being 11lbs.
To Ryan’s credit, he told us where to look on Saturday and he was right. I was marking lots of good fish, but I just couldn’t get the new boat locked down with the anchors I had on board. Oh well, things like that are to be expected with a new boat.
Already thinking about making a late fall trip back to go after some bigger blue cats!
