    Hey guys,

Wondering what folks consider an avg day of spearing in terms of:

    1) Pike seen
    2) Pike speared

This is my first year spearing for pike, just wondering if I am on the right track or not.

    Thanks!

My Father does some spearing. His dark house is on a large lake in central Minnesota. He has speared about 25 pike this winter since Christmas and he goes about twice a week for a few hours. The lake has very specific regulations on size so all of his pike are under 30 inches.

People can’t keep a proper size Walleye AFTER it hits the top of the hole. I have little faith anybody knows the size of a Pike or Muskie when that spear leaves their hand.

I used to spear quite a bit, not as much anymore. I usually bring home 2-3 pike each outing and generally see 5-10 or so. I’m not into trophy pike, so the big ones get a good look and a pass.

Although I have to agree with you Dutch, the key here is if you are unsure, the spear doesn’t leave your hand.

    Same as shooting roosters only
Drake Wood Ducks only (boy that’s an old one)
    Bucks only

Personally I haven’t speared one over 3-4 pounds (back in a day) but there are some days you’ll see a lot deep and other days nothing. Three was the limit back then.

Sakakawea has been slower the last couple years. Now it seems its a good day if you see 3-5 pike all day. Size is all over the place too, next fish could be 2 lbs or 25lbs.

I average about 3-4 hours per trip I have found 10 am to 2 pm the best times for me. I have not got as many this year for some reason they have not decoyed well they have hit the decoy so fast and I can’t get them back did the golf ball decoy and he ate it and took off. This year I have speared in a little deeper water than normal 10 foot i usually don’t go that deep. It depends on the lakes where I’m at it has been a struggle to find clear enough water. For me it’s the thrill to see them. If I spear one a trip i’m lucky that usually does not happen all the time.
