Anyone else have a subscription? I have had it for years but the format has slowly changed over the years from Minnesota Sportsman to Midwest Game & Fish. It used to exclusively be all Minnesota-based content as the seasons changed. Then it was more of a regional content magazine. Well now its all over. Its not even “Midwest.” Last month’s edition had big game hunting in the Rockies and Peacock Bass fishing in the Amazon. Not that I don’t like this content but I enjoyed the local angle a lot more. I think I’m going to discontinue it after my last issue is sent.

That is specifically why expansion is needed. Not saying it’s you. But as subscribers decline, magazines, shows, all need to increase their base. If the original footprint is too small to sustain, need to expand the coverage to draw more subscribers

I don’t know how long it’s been but years ago I had planned on subscribing to something so I bought and looked through a bunch of different publications. My goal was local stuff. Sure, reading about other areas is fine for entertainment, but I want to know what’s working in our area, I want to read articles from industry experts who fish and hunt around here. I want articles written by outdoorsmen who hunt and fish while abiding by the same rules and regulations I do so I can apply it. I went with Outdoor News and am very happy with the content.

Agree Dan, I’ve been an Outdoor News subscriber for years. They do an occasional “out of state” article, but it’s treated as a feature piece like “Planning a Western Hunting Vacation.” Otherwise it’s 100% local and you don’t have to worry about it becoming regional as several of the neighboring states have their own “Outdoor News” publications owned by the same company. It’s not quite as good since a couple of long-time columnists have either retired or passed-on, but it’s still great content.

    X3 on Outdoor News.

I used to pick up the Midwest Outdoors Mag/newspaper occasionally but since May have not been able to find in the stores I frequent.

Wasn’t midwest outdoors magazine at one time fins and feathers. You could get the Minnesota version or Wisconsin and maybe a few other states???

Used to get the fins and feathers all the time, then they offered a lifetime subscription, didn’t take long and nothing. That pretty much took care of any magazine subscriptions for me forever.

The Midwest Outdoors used include a section that was state specific. If you bought it in MN it had a MN section, if bought in WI had WI section, etc.

i used to get outdoor news and i used to receive midwest outdoors. There are a few guys i know like Dan Galusha and Andrew Ragas that are published there occasionally and I enjoy reading their stuff. Now i can find their articles online and my wife is thankful i don’t have all these things collecting dust.

cuffs and collars is my favorite part of outdoor news but i get that in an email from DNR.

The ones from deer firearms season are the best (and the worst). Here are a few of some recent ones that are so outrageous you gotta wonder if they are even real. ???

    – A deer hunter put an angling license on his buck for the site tag.
    – A hunter was walking and “tripped” into a bear den, woke up the sleeping bear, and then had to dispatch the disgruntled beast.
    – A hunter was unable to fill his deer tag during opening day so he took it upon himself to shoot a grouse with his 30-06, without a valid small game license. When asked why, he responded with “because I need to feed my family.”
    – A group of hunters was making a drive and one hunter was posted downhill of an escape route. When deer ran out, he fired uphill and a stray bullet hit a power line, knocking out all power to the local town.

I am pretty sure the famous Will Roseberg was on the cover of a recent Midwest Hunting and Fishing! How much more local is that.

I highly doubt they have to make anything up. Unfortunately, the truth is going to be weird enough when you’re talking about dealing with the general public.

I remember some years back when it finally occurred to some bright spark to compare the names of those who purchased firearms deer licenses with the MN list of convicted felons who are forbidden from possessing a firearm. Completely unsurprising that there were a few hundred convicted felons that were happily admitting to committing a crime that would land them back in the pen. You can’t fix…

    congrats on the retirement.

Glenn. I know you just retired in September. I had been planning on next September but decided to retire now. We should get together after Covid is over. I’ve been going up to your area since the late 70s. One friend has a cabin on the north end of Sand and another on Jessie. I know Rileys, formerly Cannibal Junction, Hayslips and Ritchies in Marcell well. I’ve even been known to catch some fish in the area.

I started getting Fins & Feathers in the mid 70s a few years after it came out. Probably got it for 5-6 years. Good local info.
