Midsize pick-up or….

I have a 2017 Colorado and it pulls my 18.5 Alumacraft no problem, doesn’t even feel jerky. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy one again except my kids are in their teens and it’s tough to haul more than 3 others around

Good deal. ya I could see that being tough with teenagers. Did you get the 5′ or 6′ box?

Ive had mid sized trucks, SUVs and full size trucks. All of them met my needs which included hauling a 17.5 3k fishing boat. Currently have a full size but thats primarily because I have a wife, 3 boys and 2 dogs. Once the family is grown and it might be time for something new I would definitely look at a midsized again but of the gas mileage is the same, as is often the case, may as well go bigger

Right. When you start breaking down the costs and mpg, full size seem to hae the upper hand.. except when the don’t fit in the garage doah

I happened to be taking some tools out to my shop when I read this so I measured my truck out of curiosity. 2018 silverado extended cab with 6.5′ bed, without the hitch in the receiver it was 19’6″, 20′ on the head with my 2″ drop hitch in. So at 20′ minus the OH door you would have to park perfect and have your hitch out to ‘maybe’ get the door to shut.
Our last house (bump out in middle of garage, truck on one side boat on the other), my wife parked in the ‘middle’ and didnt want to have to have the OH door open in order to open the back hatch to unload groceries and such in winter so I mounted one of those longer soft foam dock bumpers on the wall, once she nosed the vehicle up till it touched then she knew it was in enough. I think your situation though may be too tight to even allow for the bumper.

Why wouldn’t a standard half ton fit in your garage. Same garage and depth as mine and my old 4 door short box fit in perfect. Our tahoe fit in perfect. Just hang a rope and tennis ball from the ceiling to touch your windshield. Then you know the exact depth to park every time

    rope and tennis ball

People laugh, but the string and tennis ball is money. Although, my wife still feels the need to pull forward about 8″ once the windshield hits the ball. rotflol

I’m not sure what your point is. My point was that today’s “ranger” size trucks are more than adequate in terms of what a 1/2 ton has historically been able to do unless you’re in the minority where you need additional towing and hauling capacity above what the “ranger” size trucks can reasonably provide. At the same time, they get a lot of flack for not being a “full size” truck (ie your post above).

My point is you said all trucks are basically diluted down to grocery getters meaning they only haul paper bags filled with bread. I merely pointed out that nearly every SUV or truck is not used in its intended purpose and what is considered an offroad vehicle rarely goes off road.
I need a 6.5′ bed to haul my fish house so I can close the end gate and no midsize truck has that. Most half tons dont.

I usually just back in the garage since there is a rear view camera there anyways.

Speaking for my own situation a standard half-ton would fit in my spec garage. But I got a lot of other stuff, too ) Currently my workbench prohibits it, but my wife parks our Expedition right next to me (no bench in front of her) and we get about a foot of clearance between her and the closed garage door. That’s with the front bumper pretty much touching the wall. I’m currently kicking around about 3 different ideas to re-arrange my garage to re-locate the work bench. But nonetheless, I have had good luck with the Colorado and it’s all the truck I need anyway. I’m more interested in being to walk from one side of my garage to the other without having to side-step, brush up against a dirty vehicle, etc.

I have cameras all around my truck so I can see when I am about to hit the fan in front of my truck and still make sure I am in far enough for the bumper to clear the garage door. Just pay attention and have the cameras all on BEFORE going into the garage or you might tear your mirror off. Dont ask me how I know.

With the rangers not being released until 2019, used stock is very limited.

Mine is a 2019 with about 19k miles on it. I bought it last August when it had 13,500 miles on it. Some old timer in Sioux Falls used it to get groceries and go to church on a weekly basis.

I used to have a Ranger right out of college in 2005. It was the first vehicle I fully bought on my own. The towing capacity of that version is nothing like the one I have now. The one I have now has upgraded frame components, cooling, and transmission as a part of the trailer tow package. Frankly I’m somewhat shocked it has a towing capacity up to 7500 pounds. The older versions were half that.

I tell you what the surround vision cameras are absolutely a game changer. Especially while towing. When I have a trailer attached and put a blinker on the large display shows the side view down the side of my truck. Amazing. I was worried about my mirrors being wide enough to see around my boat since I couldnt get the towing mirrors. The mirrors are fine and these cameras are unreal.

At my house vehicles stay in the driveway and toys in the garage. The garage is a every night hang out. Would suck having it filled with vehicles.

I always wonder where towing ratings come from. You ever pull 7500 pounds. It’s heavy. I pull a 10k cat generator or a dump trailer and skid loader daily, I don’t want 7500 behind my 2500 let alone a ranger.

Oh heck no, I would never tow anything that big. I would hesitate to even tow 5000 pounds. My boat/trailer is max 3500 pounds. I was only pointing out how the towing capacity has improved compared to an older version Ranger than I used to have.

My folks have a 2090 Warrior that is like a barge. Its very noticeable when I’m in their 1/2 ton truck with that thing behind it.

Being able to brake safely and properly is just as important as ensuring safe towing capacity.

I saw a guy towing a skidsteer with a halfton. That is flat out dangerous IMO.

2 nights ago I hauled a pallet of bag mix which is 3200 pounds in the bed of my truck and a dump trailer full of dirt to a side job. That was heavy on the new 2500 with upgraded bilstien shocks and air bags. And I was under what it’s rated for. I always wonder where the big number ratings come from

3200 would be pushing stock payload limit of a 3/4 ton isn’t it? I know it’s not stock and the bags are a big help

Stock is 3900. I wish realistically I could get by with a 1/2 ton. But side work has gotten so busy the last few years I pull a mini hoe, skid loader or concrete all the time the bigger truck just made sense. My 1/2 couldn’t handle the heavy stuff and my old 2500 wasn’t reliable.

For what it’s worth, My brother has a Ford Maverick and loves it. The interior is spacious and comfortable. The bed is small, but super accessible. It tows 3,500# and gets high 20’s low 30’s mpg and brand new is less than $30K.

What do they get when towing a 3000 pound boat ? And how do they handle when doing so?
My neighbor bought one a couple weeks ago. Looks like a sweet little around town rig. I wouldn’t mind something lite like that for the hunting trails

He hasn’t towed much. My boat is about #3,500. He towed it a couple of blocks just to see how it felt. It handled it well. Even has a tralier break control. I would imagine it would be a pretty significant drop in mpg towing though. I have an F150 and I have been impressed how “truck like” the Maverick feels. It’s a perfect option for him.

I can’t afford one but I would like a small truck for hunting and ice fishing.
Been eyeballing mid 90s early 2000s rangers but they hold there values

Dumb moment, I was going off of memory and what the listing had when we bought a few years ago. Pulled tape and it’s 19.5’/234″ from the wall to the inside of the garage door. Even worse roll doah

No wonder the silverado ext. cab 6.5′ I tried to pull in didn’t have a chance.

Colorado crew cab 6′ bed- 224.9″
    5′ bed- 212.7″
    Canyon crew cab 6′ – 224.6

    Cool maverick!

I proved out the 2.0EB/8-speed combo last year with my wife’s Edge, I’m pretty sure the 4K tow package has better gearing than hers. Getting ready to head up North next weekend, boat is a Lund 1650 Angler, similar to what you mentioned.

At only 200″ OAL, the Mav is a pretty easy fit in the garage,,,,
