Mid-2000'2 Lund Recall for gas vapors – Need help

    Hello everyone,

I’m an old member from long ago. I used to live in northern Illinois and crappie fish Pool 13 all the time. I think my old handle was “Pool13_Jeff”. A couple college degrees and a divorce later, I am now in Arkansas. Anyway, I have a 2004 Lund Explorer that I purchased new. I have always had a gas smell in the rod locker, as well as some of the other compartments. Within a couple years of buying the boat (perhaps less than a couple years), I received a recall notice for this very issue. I excitedly went to my dealer and showed him the recall notice. He told me my serial number didn’t have the issue. Like an idiot, I accepted that… Fast forward to now: I’m tired of the gas vapors! I had to venture north of the Mason-Dixon line to find a Lund dealer and they are trying to find the old recall notice, but haven’t been able to. Is there anyone that may be able to help me in my search. At this point, I’m not looking to get Lund to cover the fix, I just want to know what the fix was. I would appreciate any assistance anyone could provide!

It could be the vent line came unhooked and is hanging in the rod locker or a damaged line.
From online pictures the vent is on the passenger side above the Live well drain.

I have a Lund Fisherman w the issue as do a lot of others from past threads here. I would love to see anything relating to a recal or fix notice from Lund.

Might want to contact Lund, then share the info.

Thank you!!!! Thank you!!!! Thank you!!!! Munchy, you made this Damn Yankee so happy! BTW, a Damn Yankee is one that goes to the south and isn’t leaving… This at least gives us something to go on.

Not a problem sir! Hope you find your issue. May be a good idea to take pictures, document everything, and get ahold of Lund. Could possibly be more of an issue than they realize. If you don’t get anywhere with them then the Coast Guard (or possibly the NTSB?) may be a good spot to drop an email.

If you get it fixed please post on here what they did to fix it. My Pro V does the same thing. I replaced all the vent lines and fill line but still get fumes. I don’t have any gas leakage just fumes. The only way that I can see for the fumes to get into the rod storage areas is thru the tubes that th wires are run thru. My next step will be is to block those in the bilge with steel wool and see if that works

I have seen several threads on different boats where fumes are always present even after replacing the vent lines, fill tubes and clamps but the fumes still remain.
it makes me wonder if when this happens if its actually the fuel sending unit gasket leaking from either dry rot or coming loose.
if you see that the gasket has cracks in it,its time to replace it.
the tank normally doesnt get full enough for this area to leak unless its over filled, but it will leak fumes non stop.

I thought about that. I may pull the inspection plate up and clean that area up real good and try silicone on it first. If that stops it I will replace that gasket. I don’t notice it on the water but sitting in the barn I can smell it

Mine has done it since I first put gas in it, so I’m hopeful this is it. We had to throw out two sets of Toggs, because we just couldn’t get the gas smell out of them, even after washing several times.

It’s a common problem with those plastic fuel tanks, they permeate fuel odors.Tank was probably made by Moeller.I had that issue with a 1998 ProV.Removed the floor panel to check for problems, and found none.

The only real fix is to replace tank with a non-permeating type.Or just open all hatches when not using it.

If you do go to a dealer or Lund about it, don’t be too surprised if the “not-that-serial-number” dealer submitted the recall claim to Lund without doing the work…….

My tank is made by Moeller. It has a tag on it telling the gallons and model number. One more thing is when I changed the lines they just fell apart when I started working on them. I have no idea if these were from the factory or not. That is one thing I was sure glad I replaced

My crestliner is a 94 and the tank is an original plastic Moeller. Not hard to imagine the fuel sender leaking, my whole tank is warped on the top so nothing really would sit flush very well, and it’s warped so the middle sags down(where the sender is) I don’t have issues with mine but could see the possibility. Plus the fact those screws could easily have stripped on installation of new one from guys who think to torque everything with 10000ppi.

Got a recommendation from a fellow here whistling on some airplane gasket sealant that may have worked well on my tank. I replaced send unit and fuel pick-up line and have no issues since. Can’t recall the name of it, can look into it if you’ll be repairing.

Well, I finally got the boat back last week. It had been north of the Mason-Dixon line for over two months. Even after providing Lund with the recall information provided here, they claimed they couldn’t find any record of the recall… The dealer did check for the recall issue and mine was fine for that issue. The dealer checked everything out and found the vent line was plugged with mud. Darn mud daubers! I do recall that the smell had become much worse over the years, but it has been there since the beginning. They checked out the tank and went over everything. I have to wait to take the boat out, as I am in the middle of building a walk-in cooler to hang deer and wild hogs. One of the few things I miss about the north is the ability to hang deer for awhile.I appreciate the help and guidance you guys provided me! Stay warm up there. It’ll be 67 here today.
