Dodger/Flasher Questions

Looking to work dodgers a bit more into the mix this summer and have a couple of questions…

Seems to me they should be “swaying” back and forth (i.e. side to side) vs. continually rolling (i.e. spinning in circles), correct?

We typically run four riggers, two dipseys and a couple of boards. As far as the four riggers are concerned, two dodgers seems like plenty (for now anyway). Run them both low, both high or one of each? Keep the lead lengths the same or one shorter/one longer. Trying to accomplish two things…a)determine the most effective way to fish them in the sread and b) minimize the risk of tangles.

    Thanks for the help

It depends where your fishing. I used to run dodgers or flashers on all my riggers, then run a slider above the ball. I used to keep my leads shorter of the ball so when they come in attracted to the flash and motion of the hardware, even if they didnt hit it, they would hit the slider. Also the difference between a dodger and a flasher is that the dodger sways more side to side, and can spin out at higher speeds. A flasher has a thinner profile and is more tolerable to a faster troll speed. God, how I miss living by Lake Michigan! In Illinios waters on Lake Mich. you can run 3 rods per person with one slider on each line. In Wi. waters, you can only run 2 rods per person and a slider counts as another rod. I would “fix” my sliders with a rubber band to keep them at a desired depth. I would also use high quality Sampo swivels to keep my sliders from twisting.

Dodger= slower speeds; should sway back and forth…
Flasher= faster speeds; should spin constantly…

I usually try to keep the leads short, 10-20 ft. and run them the lowest in the spread(deepest) Keep in mind that they will sink when you slow down or turn.

    Thanks guys

When I first got into fishing the big ponds twenty some years ago, it was Lake Superior and one of our bread and butter setups for lakers was an Abe & Al with a Wobble Glo. Really haven’t spent much time trolling Superior since getting out of college…turned my efforts to Michigan, where spoons and j-plugs have almost always gotten the job done. That said, there are those times when it slows down and you just have to reach for another tool in the toolbox. Started playing around with leadcore a couple of years ago and decided this was the year to use dodgers with some more frequency.
