All I can say is “WOW”! Since the days of reading in magazines about the great sumo smallies of Sturgeon Bay, I knew one day I’d have to fish them. Fortunately for me, an old high school buddy bought a place in Little Sturgeon Bay and the star aligned. Last year, I was 2 weeks too late-and in this region, when the fish are done and gone—they are done and gone! But, the walleyes of the bay did not disappoint and the trip still a success. This year when AJ said “get over here NOW!”, I did not wait. So, this last weekend I packed up the family and out the door we went. Still, we were on the tail end of the bite and in some bays the spawn was done and male bass guarding fry-other bays still in full swing. Essentially, we targeted bays that had cooler water and this ment fish that were not as far along in the spawning process. As most know that fish this region in the spring, these fish get pounded with endless bass tournament after bass tournament, big and small. This ment scaling down our presentation, doing some things different and ultimate finess being the name of the game. It was obvious these fish have seen every tube, wacky worm and jig known to man over the past weeks. Essentially, we took things down to a smaller and more basic level and tried to be natural as possible-which in turn brought many bites and big bites to the boat.
Both AJ and I tagged out at 22 inches with 20 inchers being common and most fish between that 18-21 inch mark. Nice when you can say a 16 incher was the small fish but on the last day a 12 incher came to the boat.
I am already looking forward to next year!!!!!!!
