I was finally able to make it back down to the harbor for some ice fishing today with a few friends. It wasn’t fast action but we did manage to ice some nice trout which is always good especially with the slower bite this winter. The weather was also decent and the ice is starting to go fast in certain areas with current. We iced 2 steelhead and 2 browns with one of the browns being a big mama brown. 3 of the trout came on tipups and one jigging. Fun day but I think I am ready for open water!

I think there will be some safe ice this weekend but there are some areas that you really have to be careful around. With all the snow it is becoming very slushy and the old holes are not freezing over. I stepped in a few yesterday. Anywhere with deeper drifts of snow near dock I would be careful around. Also any areas around current, walls, aerators, etc the ice is not consistant.

    Andy – Great job.
Mark – talk to Wade, we had a long talk yesterday about a few details.

The forecast for SE WI over the rest of this week is to get into the upper 30’s to low 40’s. The snow is melting, but the cold nights are helping to prevent any major run off for now. As the flow rates increase in the drainage ditches and eventually the tributaries, the steelhead will definately stack up much more in the next two weeks. With any substantial run-off, the steelhead and the few spring run browns will make their journey up the tribs for providing some great flyrod action.

Anybody know about the ice in the northern bays like Manitowoc, Kewaunee etc. ?
It looks like I might be up that way the 13th..
