We fished Port Washington three times over the weekend – Sat am, Sunday am and Sunday pm. Things were a little slow for us, but some guys were coming in with 0 or 1, so I guess we did ok. Sat am we went 3 for 6. 2 smaller kings and 1 nice 10lb rainbow. Lost 2 really nice rainbows that were bigger than the one we landed. Nice arial displays!! Sunday am we went 4 for about 8. All kings. Sunday pm we went 0/1, but weather blew in and cut our trip short. The one we lost was a nice rainbow – jumped after busting the line.
Dipsys and boards were working well. Leadcore didn’t go much for us, but some other guys did well on it. J-plugs were really shining, and the bright orange, pink, and monkey puke colored spoons up top for steelies were working. Some guys were doing very well in REALLY skinny water – 10-20 fow!! We fished mainly 50-70 fow. Water was very cold at times, anywhere from 49 degrees (!) on the surface to 67 degrees. Cold water very close to shore, hence the skinny water bite. We were running straight j-plugs off of a 1/4 oz beadchain sinker / boards over 70 fow and picking up fish. Pretty cool to pick up kings 5 feet down over 70+ fow.
The rust really showed this weekend, with all of the lost fish. Bad drag settings and board issues were most of the problem. Lost one board, some spoons, some j-plugs, some core… Ouch.
Morning fishing usually saw us having lines down by 3am. First fish usually around 4 – 4:30. Winds were a little breezy this weekend, but mostly out of the NW, so no too rough close to shore. Very nice near-shore boating for the most part.
Heading back out this Thursday – Sunday. Hope to pick up a few more!!
