Hit the Big Pond trolling for salmon/trout on Friday and again yesterday. Stunk it up on Friday with a big, fat skunk, which is very difficult to accept for a 4 am to 9 am trip…..not supposed to happen on a sun rise outing.
So Monday, pulled the stops and invited my good-luck charm Diesel for an afternoon outing. Now, keeping in mind that we have limited out on most previous trips to the Big Pond, to the point where he’d be whining from sore arms, we set out at 2 pm, heading straight out to 200 fow to troll the coho bite we heard about at the fish cleaning station when launching….but that didn’t materialize. So as the waves grew from 1 footers to 3+ with a late afternoon wind shift, we headed back into calmer water and finished off the evening trolling between 65 to 80 fow. Went 3 for 5 today, but two were tiny shakers released to grow up. Lost one on a planer with 3 color lead core, and a decent king within a few feet of being netted, that smacked a dipsey rig/spoon. Diesel went home with a 7 lb. king for the smoker, caught on a flasher/fly set down 70 feet on the downrigger. Overall, scatterred and slow is the word we’ve heard from numerous fishermen the past couple weeks. With both of us mumbling in disbelief that this could not be happening to us…..we agree that we’ll be back!
