Craig D, my buddy Jim and I just returned from a 4 day trip. We arrived on Thurs around 1 pm and heard reports that the fishing had started to pick up again. The colder than normal water temps we had been reading about kinda got us discouraged but we still couldn’t wait to get on the water. Rigged with spoons and dodger/fly combos, we headed for our same waypoints from last year that we had marked on the Lakemaster chip. It didnt take long at all to connect with our first fish, a nice 8 pound rainbow taken on a orange spoon in 65 feet of water. Second fish, 30 minutes later was a nice 12 pound rainbow. And the last fish of the evening was a nice 8 pound coho. Friday morning we boated a nice 18 pound king before we got chased off by storms. We got back on the water for the evening bite and boated 2 nice rainbows. Sat morning we got another nice king in the morning before storms again chased us off the lake. Sat evening we landed 3 nice rainbows and we met up with IDO pro staffer Mike Finke. Mike was fishing alone waiting for clients to arrive during the week. Mike offered me a seat this morning in his Skeeter. And Mike saved my lack luster trip for me. We hit the water at 5:30am this morning rigged with dipsey divers, flatlines and down riggers. We went 6 for 8 with a 4 year old king, two coho’s and three nice rainbows. Mike is a lake Michigan vet and his 20’5 Skeeter is fully rigged for Salmon fishing. Not to mention hes a great guy.
The pattern right now is this:
The winds and cooler summer have not yet set up a solid thermocline. Therefore fishing is day to day.. Right now the fish are using the entire water column and there is no solid pattern. I just got off the phone with Mike and he boated 4 nice rainbows just off the piers in 25 feet of water in front of Two Rivers.
Right now the entire water column is 43-45 degrees. The fish are still scattered and using the bottom to the surface to feed. Orange spoons have been best.
