Hit the Big Pond at McKinley harbor yesterday for a change of pace, to target salmon and trout with walleye gear. Launched at 8 am, and the action started out strong. we boated 3 nice browns in first hour, and had several missed fish and lost fish. They favored shiners, over fatheads and skein, but also hit stumpjumpers and small spinners. Had some difficulty landing a few on the light gear, as they put on quite an aerial display as they skillfully escaped the clutches of the hooks. Kept 5 for the smoker in the 3 to 6 pound range.
But couldn’t keep ourselves away from the eyes. My buddy and I planned to play in the river some, searching for eyes, which have been stocked here for some time now. This was our first stab at eyes here, and we ended up finding a good number of fish way up from the Hoan, but most of them were very small, 6 to 10 inchers. The three larger fish were in the 14 to 16 inch range.Boated at least 15 eyes, and all fish released, plus numerous missed hits. Used up all our fatheads by dark, and called it a day, as we chugged back with no wake thru downtown Milwaukee to the launch. Pics to follow in the next day or two. Back to chasing eyes next opp I get.
