Late in posting, cuz things have been nuts, but here it is. Went up to Sturgeon Bay last Thursday for three days on the big water. Targeted smallies on day one, and saw a bunch of them in the flats, but still in the beds…the only way they’d hit is if you harassed them right in the beds. We got one that way, but not our style of fishing, so we gave up looking for feeding fish in the flats, and headed out to Monument reef. The water was flat as a pancake all day long, so we decided to pitch jig/leech or jig/shiner starting in the 10 to 15 foot depth range, and boated a dozen or so smallies and lost as many as well, most in the 17 to 19 inch class, and some very fat ones. Strayed into deeper water, looking for ole marble eyes, but no takers. Back to the canal we went after our fill of smallies, looking for the toothy pike, and struck out there too, except for a couple snakes.
Next two days, we joined a budddy and his local fishing buddy, trolling the Dyckesville area. Reports from his local buddy is that the eye fishing had been very good, so sounded like a no-brainer. But with both boats trolling boards, flat lines, and bottom bouncers for several hours on each day, we struck out on the eyes…only the goats seemed interested, and took a liking to our presentations…good for a momentary thrill until you see their ugly mugs. Couple cats came to the boats as well.
Should’ve been there last week…..same ole song.
But learned a little about some new water, and saved some reefs and other structure in the ole memory banks, and in the 334C. We’ll be back.
