Well, after hearing about and reading about the fast and furious coho action in the Kenosha and Racine areas the past couple weeks, I decided to give it a whack yesterday for a few hours in the afternoon. I think that most would agree that the early morning bite in these parts of Lake Michigan is generally better, but my IL buddy couldn’t make it till mid-afternoon, so we launched at Racine about 2:30 and were trolling in 45 FOW shortly after that. Took about 5 minutes to hook, and then lose the first fish, and then lost two more in the first hour, as we trolled due east to get to deeper water. Took us three fish before my IL buddy was convinced that you do not have to violently set the hook….he was close to swimming back to shore. By 7 pm, we boated 4 fish, 3 coho and one Laker, and the talley for the day was 4 for 7, plus a couple drive-bys. . Best action was in the 60 to 80 foot range.
The morning crews we spoke with before launching all indicated better action in the earlier hours, with many of them limiting out on nice eater-size fish, such as the ones shown in this photo.
Red dodgers/fly combos took all the fish, and all in the upper 30 feet of the water column. I only ran one sppon, set deep on a downrigger, hoping to nail that stray king, but no takers today.
Some good reports starting to surface for the waters off the Milwaukee harbor.
