Paid a visit to Gills Rock/Rowley’s Bay Wednesday afternoon through Friday morning last week. Fishing AND catching were terrific! First night in Gills Rock was a bit slow for us, so we opted to run out into the lake from Rowleys Bay…pretty much had the lake to ourselves. Virtually every fish came from 50-55 feet down over 90-100 feet of water. 50/50 split between downriggers and dipseys run at trolling speeds of 2.3-2.5 knots. All fish taken on spoons that had some green in them (coupled with orange, purple or black were best for us). Nice mix regarding size with about a 60/40 split of kings to rainbows. Biggest kings in the 21-22 pound range and one beauty of a rainbow at 31″. Great maiden voyage for my buddie’s new boat. Good luck and be safe when venturing onto the big pond! Never posted pics before…I’ll see if I can get some up.

    TSCTSC,

Gills Rock is located at the very tip of Door County in Wisconsin, with Green Bay located on the west side of the penninsula and Lake Michigan on the west side. Rowleys Bay is located approximately eight miles south of Gills Rock on the Lake Michigan side. The actual City of Green Bay is something like 80 miles south of there.

It has been pretty rough out there this past week. Boat landings are also a zoo be prepared.

We’re headed up that way for a week. 8/5-12 Dad was up for 3 days last weekend and they did very well! Prolly staying at Snug Harbor out of sturgeon bay. Would like to try for some eyes this year as well. Any advice for the bay side. Any reports? Any certain cranks I need to pick up on the way or before?

Also, fishing out of a 18.5′ boat, where would we try for salmon on the bay side if the waves get too big for us? Any info would be appreciated, Thanks!

Well didn’t chase them eyes much at all again this year. Never even made it over to Green bay. Did find some weedline fish though in the canal.

Talk about a hot bite! The Kings were hitting everything for us all week. Didn’t work the reef to hard. 150FOW morn and evening was the ticket and down DEEP during the day. The charters weren’t having to work very hard at all either. Lots were filling up by 7-8 in the mornings.
