Have been reading and hearing about some good action days out in the Big Pond for spring coho, so gave it a try this morning. My neighbor, his two boys, my boy and I launched out of McKinley at 5 am, ran out due east of north gap to 60 fow, and set lines, trolling east. Ran two downriggers two dipseys, and three lead core rods, 2, 3 , and 5 color, with the 2 on a planer board. When we reached 75 fow, a short flurry of action began. We picked up 4 coho, each about 3 to 4 lbs., by the time we reached 80 fow, on 4 different rods, spoons and flies. The young anglers handled them like champs, and we started out 4 for 4. Kept heading east, but no other hits to 100 fow, so we did an about face, and headed back to the 75 foot zone. Pecked away at a few more, and ended up 7 for 7 with anothe coho, a small 6 lb. or so chinook, and finished it off with a dandy 13 lb. steelhead….it was my sons turn, and after about 3 minutes with this one, he got some help from neighbor Bob to land it. While it was not as fast and furious as we hoped for, we called it a day at noon, and had a very satisfied and tired crew as we headed back home and talked about the nap to come. Will post some pics later.
