Well since I have been neglegent in getting my boat ready for Rock River walleyes I have been going back to fishing the way I did before I bought my boat 12 years ago – Spring Steelhead. Now with the higher water and stained conditions many in the area are complaining that the tributary rivers in the Milwaukee area are unfishable. NOT TRUE.
Go to the parking lot at 800AM. Clear skies, sunny, cold, ice on the rod guides from test casts for depth. Got the spawn on a slip bobber. Gotta love it! I started at one stretch on the Milwaukee by UWM park and ride with no luck as I was following some advice on fishing deeper holes this time of year. Well, all my luck has been in fast water so what do I do? Fish the deeper slow moving holes. Nothing.
Decided to go to what I know. Fishing back eddyies off fast water. I lost the bobber in the fast water. When in doubt set the hook! Got a female about 5 pounds. Nice fight. Right at that time another guy and his son pulled up and start fishing. He got a nice male. Then another male which he let his son reel in – Very cool. He was fishing the even faster water with a break.
It was now about 1120 and after several snags and shreded spawn sacks I make the famous statement. “A couple more casts and I gotta leave at 1130.” Well, the next cast I watch the bobber stop in the current and hover. I test for resistance. FISH ON!!! Fought the fish out of the current into a back eddy and landed a nice male. I pack up to leave just as another guy pulls up and says “What? you leaving? – looks like you got a couple of the prefect size for the grill” .
Yeah Spring walleye can be great but it is nothing like wading up to you waist, reading the fast water, pinpointing the area you want to work, and bringing in the fish.
Both fish were about 22-23 inches long. Will post a couple pics later.
By the way this place is only 10 – 15 minutes from my office. Got the rods and a cooler in the toyota right now. Also found the way to drive even closer than walking 1/4 mile of shoreline. Will be great to fish for 1/2 hour at lunch time in my office clothes . My wife just doesn’t understand how cool this is.
She just wants me to keep bring home the rainbows .
Hummm, Steelies at lunch time and the Rock River on the weekends. I think I am figuring out this life/work, opps I mean life/fishing balance .
I guess that is a good enough excuse to keep fishing.
