Come h#ll or highwater Im going to make it over to the big Lake to do some salmon trolling this coming summer. Its been 3 years since I made the 6 hour trip.

I run the typical dipsey and downrigger pattern but want to add leadcore to the arsenal. Ill probably be limited to 2 rods for the core. How much would you put on those two rods? My thoughts are a 5 and 7. Any input?

That all depends on how deep the fish are running when you get there.
Some years the 2 & 3 cores do great and usually still work well in the very early morning hours and other years the five through full cores work better.
Another way to go would be to setup with the 2 & 3 cores, then add torpedo divers to those rigs to get them deeper.
I plan on adding some torpedo divers to my arsenal next year.

I like to run a 50 ft. fluorocarbon leader (20 lb) and 2 colors of leadcore with either a spoon or orange dodger/green fly combo off a planer board. This combo was a killer for steelies and cohos last year out of Manitowoc.

It definately depends on water temps and how deep the fish are, but for a general rule, if I had to pick two setup’s it’d be 5 and 7 color. From there you can add snap weights, etc to get deeper if you need to. There are certainly times when 2 and 3 color work great for Rainbow’s, but kings usually come off 5 and more….

We have caught plenty of kings on 2 & 3 color lead core. Not doing the middle of the day but in the pre-dawn hours, I would take a 2 & 3 color lead core over a 5 & 7.
During the day on the other hand, I fully agree with the above. Five & seven core are much better during daylight hours.
