I never fished for salmon but thought if they were moving into where I could troll in the harbor might be good. Any reports? I don’t have down riggers to go deep.I have a 18 pro v. I have personally not been able to get out for the past two weeks due to other commitments, and not looking good for this guy this weekend either. However, did just talk to a buddy this morning who was out twice over the Labor Day weekend, and has info from two of his friends from the same period.
The north and northeast and heavy westerlies we’ve had here for a week or so have prevented many boats from heading out past the breakwalls. But that didn’t stop the annual migration of the kings into the Milwaukee harbor, and some nice fish have been caught in the harbor and up the river. Dipsies and downriggers are the normal methods used when fishing in close quarters with other boats, since having a spread of boards will cause problems when multiple boats are circling a relatively small area. In the past, there has also been a jigging bite in and around the gaps, using 1/2 oz or heavier tipped with gulp 5 inch jerk shads or other similar baits. But that doesn’t seem to have materialized this year, or else nobody is talking about it.
If I do happen to be able to get out there soon, I’d be trolling in and out of the gaps where possible, and maybe spend some time jigging the gaps as well, since the bite and fight of kings and other salmon/trout on spinning gear is a real hoot. Good luck if you make it out.
